Toyota’s spirited response
| OYOTA is rarely the company that first springs to mind when award-win ning diesel engines are considered.
Companies such as Ford, Volkswagen,
BMW and Renault have all produced diesel power plants that make headlines with their power, sophistication and innovation, but Toyota has been quietly mopping up a whole heap of UK sales with engines like the 108 b.h.p. D4-D power plant as found beneath the bonnet of the Corolla T-Spirit. The figures speak for themselves. Toyota’s
diesel sales were up by 76 per cent in 2001 and a whopping 120 per cent in 2002 as more peo ple saw the benefits of the D-4D engine’s reli ability, parsimony and performance. what, having reduced the length of a Fiat Punto by half a metre or so but you get the point. The Punto is right up there with the seriously big sellers and to commemorate the fact, Fiat has released a special edition dubbed the Punto 5 Million. A smart, contemporary shape, a wide range
of engines, a solid interior and competitive pricing make the Punto a decent buy. The 5 Million special edition aims to attract buyers with an almost irresistible value proposition. You know the deal with special edition mod els. They are based on an existing model in the range, pile on a fair bit of extra equipment and then tack on a couple of hundred pounds to the sticker price. Except nobody seems to have told Fiat. The 5 Million is based on the 1.2-litre
Active model, the three and five-door versions of which retail at £6,999 and £7,579 respec tively. Instead of bumping the prices up a tad, Fiat has instead slashed £400 off, the three and five-door 5 Million models selling for £6,595 and £7,175. Straight off the bat, the 5 Million looks like a good piece of business. When you realise that
Fiat has also included a CD-based stereo and a year’s free insurance (subject to the usual terms and conditions) it’s a steal. Given that many of the Punto’s customers
are the sort of young, urban drivers that insur ance companies love to wring dry, the free insurance offer can almost be worth its weight in gold. If you have not had the opportunity to get
behind the wheel of this latest shape Punto, you are missing out on a genuinely good dri ver’s car. A far cleverer suspension system has catapulted this car to the top of its class in terms of ride comfort, while a much stiffer body has done the same for refinement.
The Punto 5 Million is a sound financial case every way up

the biggest cars in its class, one of the only superminis large enough to provide a realistic reason not to buy a larger family hatchback. Three can sit across the back seat, making use of a 9.3cuft capacity boot. The Punto has also gained a reputation for
competitive reliability. Warranty Direct, one of the UK’s leading warranty companies, pub lishes a reliability index charting the number of claims and the Punto has emerged as one of the three most reliable small cars on Britain’s roads. The quality of the Punto is apparent when
you drop inside, even in this bargain-priced version. With a perky engine, competitive pricing
and sharp styling, the Punto 5 Million is one of the better buys in the small car sector. You’ll need to be quick though. With a limited UK quota, they may well be disappearing fast.

with it and you will see the genius in its styling. This is a car that real
ly does grow on you. It will sprint from rest to 60 in just 6.8 seconds on the way to 146 m.p.h., all the whi le accompanied by BMW’s trademark straight six growl. Tip ping the scales at just 1,260 kg does wonders for the power-to-weight ratio, BMW having sought light weight componentry wherever pos sible. An example is the suspension system. Whereas the Z3 used the
ancient semi-trailing arm suspen
sion of a 1985 vintage 3-series, the Z4 is bang up to date, using a prop
er alloy multi link arrangement. The Z4 2.5 is a hugely surprising
car. In its driving characteristics it is much like a BMW saloon. It looks good value at just over £26,000 and once customers get used to that styling, one suspects BMW will have a winner on its hands. Those looking for BMW’s Achilles heel now have a much tougher task on their hands.

can only be bought in relatively plush T Spir it five-door hatchback trim priced at £15,300.
The engine is a pleasantly muted thing, but
it never quite reaches that level of refinement where you could conceivably forget it is a diesel. There is a gravelly tone to it that is far from unpleasant, the torque more than any thing else letting you know that it drinks from the black pump.
The figures that matter are the 49 m.p.g.
achievable with the added benefit of the extra intercooled 20 b.h.p.
The £15,300 price tag is not a huge price to
pay for a car that has been designed in France specifically around European tastes. Like the Fiat Stilo, the Toyota’s styling does little to betray the parent company’s nationality, instead opting for the sort of clean, global vil lage styling that many pundits would pigeon hole as Germanic. The Corolla’s key rival may well emerge
from the country of its birth in the form of the dCi versions of the Renault Megane. Modem car design now transcends national borders, and the Corolla is prima facie evidence. It was only a matter of time before Toyota
wrapped a decent car around this winning engine and the Corolla D4-D110 T Spirit is a very competitive all-round package. When it comes to signing on the dotted line,
the British car-buying public are some of the most knowledgeable and well informed around. Small wonder then that Corolla D-4D sales are still going steadily upwards.
