Grimm tales to tell in the open air

Grimm Tales in the Park; Dukes Theatre, Lancaster; July 4th - August 9th

ters and wicked stepmothers has arrived at the Dukes The atre, Lancaster, for rehearsals for the “Grimm Tales in the Park”, which opens on Friday, July 4th and runs until August 9 th .

stepmother in “Ashputtel” (Cinderella) and the father in “Hansel and Gretel”. Clive appeared in “Don Quixote” in the park three years ago. He has also featured in a number of TV productions. Sally Evans, from North

Wales, will be playing Gretel and the Lady in “The Lady and the Lion”. Following work with the Clwyd Youth Theatre and the National

Youth Theatre of Wales she trained a t The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Stuart Goldsmith will play

the Prince in “Ashputtel” and the second son in “The Golden Goose”. Stuart has graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and pre viously trained at Dartington and Circomedia. He is one half of the award-winning street double act The Unknown Stuntmen.

Lancaster-born Lisa

Dance shows; Sal ford Quays; July 12th and 27th

TWO totally different types of dance will be on stage in

Manchester next month. “The Cost of Living” is

an innovative dance show presented by DV8 Physical Theatre a t the Lyric on July 12th. And on July 27th, in the neighbouring Quays Theatre a t Salford Quays, Anand Yatra, the South Asian Folk Dance Festival, will feature a colourful and joyous cele bration of folk dances from the Indian sub-continent. DV8 was formed in 1986

by an independent collec tive of dancers. The company has pro

duced 13 highly-acclaimed dance pieces, which have toured internationally, and made three award-winning films for television. The company is led by

Lloyd Newson and “The Cost of Living” was origi

nally commissioned for the Sydney 2000 Arts Festival. The show, DV8’s most ambitious yet, is about per fection and pretence, about how society measures indi viduals and how we in turn value ourselves. I t features

The Amdram Slam; Blackpool Grand Theatre; June 26th and 27th

AN EXCITING new development for ama teur performers is taking place in Blackpool. Blackpool Grand Theatre* in association with

Blackpool Borough Council and Blackpool Town Centre Forum, discovered there are 30 amateur theatre groups in the area. And they are tapping their huge resource by

staging The Amdram Slam on June 26th and 27th.

The show will involve six of the local amateur groups, performing in two nights of what is

uation of The Lowry’s asso ciation with Milapfest, the year-round South Asian Arts Festival which is based in the North West.

A chance for the seaside amateurs to shine

hoped will be dynamic dramatic entertainment. Each company will have just one hour to

. set up, perform and clear the stage ready for the next one.

On Thursday In Your Face Theatre

Company presents “Anorak of Fire” fol lowed by St Bernadette’s Players with “What Shall We Do With The Body” and, finally, The Lancastrian Players present “Death In Character”. On Friday St Thomas’s Drama Group performs the world premier of “Journeys”, Bispham Occasional Players will present “Respect” and Preston Drama Club has the world premier of “The Apothecary”.

dham Pitts, (gem of a part for Eric Potts) is appalled to discover that an inspector from the capital is arriving incognito. He enlists the help of his

equally-venial cronies, the postmaster (Steve Owen) Phillip Stein, Director of Charities (Johnson Willis) Rose Quigley, Director of Schools (Eve Steele) and Mr and Mrs Robson (Rob Parry and Sue McCormick). They inevitably mistake a

worthless, bankrupt clerk, John Petty (Tim Treslove) for the inspector. The consequences of this

lead to many farcical situa tions which are played out at a cracking pace. Kevin Shaw’s direction

some of whom play several parts, extract every ounce of humour from the witty script and the addition of local dialect makes it even funnier. Alison Heffemen’s clever,

makes the most of some well-choreographed comic reactions and even moments of slapstick. The accomplished cast,

oddly-angled set makes an effective backdrop for this comedy of mistaken identi ty and crooked characters who get their deserved comeuppance.

s u n n y w i n e I AM often asked by wine producers why we as a nation do not drink very much rose. That is an easy one to answer - we don’t get enough good weather. I t needs to be warm

and sunny to really appreciate a cold glass of rose or in th is case rosado. Senorio de Serria is

the most beautiful bode ga in Navarra, North ern Spain and has had substantial new invest ment and the appoint ment of Jesus Lozann, one of Navarra’s most experienced and respect ed winemakers. The estate produced, a wide range of wines, but Jesus is something of a specialist when it comes to rose. 2002 SENORIO DE

SERRIA ROSADO a t £4. 59 is made from the Garnacha grape. The crushed grapes are left in contact with the skins for ju s t a few hours which gives this wine a lovely pink colour. I t is fresh and delicate with aromas of wild berries on the palate, it is pleas antly fruity with hints of strawberries and a nice clean, dry finish. Perfect with salads or just on its own. So get a bottle in the

‘fridge while the sun is shining, think summer, think pink.
