He was taken to nearby Airedale Hospital where he underwent an emergency operation before being transferred to intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary. But he never regained consciousness and died on September 4th with his family at his

bedside. Mr Barker, who had celebrated his 57th

birthday two days before being taken ill, was well known in the Padiham area where he was bom and brought up. He had been production director at the town’s Perseverance Mill for many years. His wife is a receptionist at Norman Cope

they were 21. The couple were members of St Mary’s RC Church, Sabden. Mr Barker had attended Padiham Green

and Accrington Grammar schools and Mrs Barker St John’s School. He left school at 16 and went into textile management at a Bum- ley company. When he was 21, he joined Perseverance

Mill in the laboratory, staying there for 20 years, the last 10 as production director. He then moved to a textile company in Standish, Wigan, for several years and 18 months ago became production manager at Woodrow Uni versal, Crosshills. His work took him all over the world buy

ing machinery for the textile industry, but he was always happy to come home to his family. He and his wife had been married for 36

years, and lived in River Drive, Padiham, until moving to Simonstone 20 years ago. Mrs Barker said she and her husband had

known each other for 45 years and his main concern was always his family, her and their three children Nicholas (32), Jane (31) and Kate (26) and their four grandchildren. When the children a ttended St John’s

School, Padiham, Mr Barker was instrumen tal, with another parent, in setting up the PTA, which is still thriving. More recently he led the Simonstone Lane Residents’ Action Group’s campaign to stop motorists using Simonstone as a “rat run”. Mrs Barker said her husband felt strongly

about local causes, and instead of flowers at the funeral she asked for donations for the Heart of Lancashire Appeal for Read and Simonstone.
