WHERE you live after the wedding and hon eymoon is a question usually answered well beforehand. Most couples these days aim to buy their own house or flat because, although renting is in many ways easier and, occasion ally, cheaper, the money for rent, once paid, is lost. Repaying a mortgage loan will end up

with a home owned by the happy couple. It is a good idea, if the aim is to buy, to obtain a

mortgage in principle. This means the mortgage lender, bank, building society, insurance company or other, will investigate the income of both part ners and state how much they: will be prepared to lend. The couple, can then sally forth to select a home at the righf price.

programme starting two months before your wedding day. Have a thorough

consultation with your beauty therapist to define your needs and discuss a look to go with your wedding outfit. Take along material swatches to help decide on colours. Make sure you make

your wedding day appointment well in advance. Have a trial make

up run two weeks before. If you book make-up, hair and dress trial on the same day you will see the overall look. The make-up on the

day should create an effect which makes you look stunning, and makes you feel better than usual. Blusher should be

used sparingly, sweep ing gently on the cheek bones, leading up to the temples. Soft Kohl liner can

be applied from the outside of the eye sweeping in slightly to make eyes, appear larg- • er.

COUPLES planning to get married will no longer have to follow the 'herd1 with their wedding gift lists. International relief and development agency World Vision is offer ing a new nuptial gift option. The charity is calling on brides-to-be and

their wedding guests to use its Alternative Gift Catalogue as part of their wedding gift list and take the opportunity to give a gift to someone less fortunate around the time of their big day. World Vision's Andrea Stephens said:

"Things have moved on from when tradi tional wedding gift lists used to help set up a home. In many cases the bride and groom already have separate homes and they sim ply.don't need toasters, cutlery and coffee makers." '. - Andrea continues: "Instead, World

Vision's Alternative Gift Catalogue is an exciting way to buy a gift for the newly weds, which is then donated to a family in the third world. For mstancc,r£95will buy a herd! of goats for a family in East Africa. It will provide them with milk, a business and an endless supply of fertiliser. "A gift certificate and a personalised card

are sent to the couple detailing the 'wedding present' that is being sent to a family over seas. It's a perfect way to share their good fortune and give some health, wealth and happiness to someone in need." Guests can't "bleat" about not being able

to find a unique gift. World Vision has come up with some alternatives to typical wedding presents: • Pots and pans - instead try an emer

gency survival pack for floods, earthquakes and famines. This will provide one homeless family with life's essentials for only £30. • Bed linen - How about 10 mosquito

nets for families in Rwanda. These nets will protect families from the deadly disease malaria, which kills two million people each year. Cost £53. • BBQ - School lunch for an Armenian

child for a year. This gift will give a child one hot meal every day for a year for only £100, less than the cost of a gas BBQ. • Roses or plants - Fruit trees for a fam

ily in Vietnam. This will give a family a reg-’ ular crop of fruit which will improve their diet and health and also allow them to sell at markets to earn a little extra income for

only £10. More information on the World Vision

’Alternative Gift'Catalogue can be found at www.worldvision.org.uk or by calling 0800 501010.

, World Vision is a Christian organisation

and one of the world's leading relief and development agencies, currently helping over 85 million people in nearly 100 coun tries in their struggle against poverty, hunger and injustice, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Budget to beat the wedding blues

IT is the biggest day of your life. You have dreamed about it for years. You want every thing to be perfect. But it is also one of the most expensive single events you’re likely to .

pay for. The average wedding in 2003, including a

honeymoon (which is usually the biggest extravagance at £2,695), will cost more than £15,000. But, as couples marry later in life - and with a huge proportion (86%) living together first - more and more people are being forced to fund their own weddings. And it seems that lack of money is one of

the primary reasons for people not taking the plunge. Research has shown that.53% of young Scottish couples living together admit that lack of funds is the only barrier to them walking up the aisle; in the UK in general 32% of men and 39% of women would rather not get married if they can’t afford to dp it properly. . . Therefore) it is not surprising that Halifax

Personal Loans estimate that it lends in the region of £50 million a year to make wedding dreams come true. Mr Peter Jackson, head of Halifax Person

al Loans, says that as times and traditions change many couples are looking at other ways to fund their big day. He said: “Traditionally, the parents of the

bride footed the wedding bill, haying spent years saving for their daughter’s big day. But times have changed. The average bride is now 27 and, therefore:, usually has a career and her independence, and 86% of couples already live together by the time they get married.

“The trend now, especially with such a

buoyant property market, is for parents to help their children with a deposit for a house instead. And while research shows that 51% of couples still get some sort of help from their families, 37%‘now pay for their own nuptials. We believe that, with a certain amount of budget planning, wedding finances can be managed without causing too much

strife.” ’ GUIDE TO WEDDING BUDGETS

• Choose the sort of wedding you want -

church or civil ceremony, wedding breakfast (including number of guests), evening recep tion, transport, outfits/dress. • Make a list of everything that needs to

be paid for - helpful guides can be found in wedding magazines and websites so you don’t forget anything. • Research the cost (especially the recep

tion and associated items such as entertain ment, decoration, accommodation) and allo cate a budget to each item. • Prioritise the items that are most impor

tant to you and come up with a realistic bud get, allowing for an overspend of about 10%. •

If your parents are helping to pay for the

wedding ask for a budget from them or ask them to pay for certain items. . • When you have a final figure for your

part of the wedding budget assess how you are going to pay for it. Credit cards and over drafts may not be the most sensible option as they allow you to stray from your budget. A

■ loan will provide you with a sum that you can allocate to different items as appropriate.

and will be able to provide a selection of properties at the right price, suggest firms of surveyors and solici tors, and, if necessary, b.uilders. It is as well to realise from the outset that apart

from the mortgage, there will be several other expens es to face in the course of the purchase. \The surveyor and solicitor will also have to be paid

and there will be insurance to buy. You will be responsible for insuring the bricks and

mortar from the day contracts are exchanged. Con tents can be insured when your house has some. Do

ADVERTISING FEATURE

not underestimate the importance of insurance and do not under-insure to save money - it is actually no savingatall. Of course, the property will have to be decorated

(unless it is brand new), and furnished. It is sensible to take time over all this - frankly there are years ahead in which to bring the home to perfection. Decorating may be done on a DIY basis or by pro

fessional decorators. If professionals are appointed, it is sensible to have estimates or prices for the job from at least three contractors. Remember too that it is not always best to accept the lowest price. • If you DIY, then use the expertise of local DIY

stores, shops and builders' merchants - they are usual ly very happy to advise. Just remember to be honest with yourself. If you are not wholly competent to do the jobj do not attempt to - the result can be more expensive than getting in a professional to begin with. Furniture can also be second-hand if you wish.

However, it is worth spending on a really good, new carpet and, of course, a brand new bed. Local stores will have a. huge selection'of both for

you to choose from, and if you bear in mind that you only get what you pay for, you will not go too far wrong. Slow payment terms will almost certainly be available on request. Window dressings are an important feature of any

home. Not only do they insulate the rooms from tem perature extremes outside, they also give that all- important first impression of your home to visitors. Remember that the windows are the "eyes" of your home, so dress them well. Local stores will have the fabrics you need to make them up yourself or have made to measure. Blinds too are available, in contrasting shades or

made to match your curtains and interior soft fur nishings. • Budgeting is essential if you are to run your home

comfortably and efficiently. Set aside certain sums every month to cover your regular outgoings. Remember to include repairs and maintenance of your property, and do not forget to keep even a small sum aside for the unexpected - it is as predictable as anything else in life. Setting up home is an exciting, if slightly frighten

ing, time. Your first home together, however, is very special and nothing you ever do together again will ever fell quite the same. So approach the task with courage, flair and inspiration and enjoy the challenge and the final result.
