PRISON was a possibility for motor cyclists going at "mind boggling" : speeds, a senior officer told a Lan cashire Police Authority public meet
ing in WKalley. Several people from various areas of the
Ribble Valley complained of continuing problems with high-powered machines, usu ally ridden by mature, rather than young people. ’ '.
'■ ■[i ■/ ■ ■ , A Newton resident said he accepted the sit
uation was difficult to police, but they, had experienced one fatal accident and two others resulting in very serious injury. ; Divisional Commander Chief Supt. David

been mind boggling," he declared, pointing out that those which constituted dangerous driving could result in a prison sentence.
■ But, emphasised Chief Supt. Mallaby - a recreational rider himself - "A lot of motor cyclists are very well-behaved and sensible." Dangers caused by "rat runs'^used by vehi
cles of all kinds in villages mainly near the A59 were highlighted by other speakers. There were complaints about young drivers. : Ribble Valley commander Insp. Bob Ford said that speed and collision rates in Gisbum
Mallaby revealed that local officers were to receive training in using.hand-held detection equipment.

" Several other initiatives had been in place
for some time, he pointed out: "We are doing a lot to address the problem of life-threatening behaviour. Some of the speeds detected have
'had been tackled by various measures and improved.' Turning on to the by-pass from Chatbum was easier for lorries than from the industrial estate link road and that was one of the quite simple problems going to be consid ered soon. "•"'The inspector added that .officers were look ing out for members of "a cadre of young men in high-powered cars with loud exhausts and music who totally ignore speed limits and are potentially involved in collisions."
Viewing county photos at camera club display
LAST week’s meeting of the Ribblesdale Camera Club comprised a view of the Lan cashire and Cheshire Photo graphic Union’s folio of black and white prints. These were from the entry
into the 2003 competition and were exhibited at the St Helen's Museum of Glass. Chairman Stephen Robinson’s “Hayfield Rider” represented Ribblesdale in the folio. The quality was generally
high and it was interesting to see the work of neighbouring clubs and of several of the lec turers and judges who will be visiting Ribblesdale in the coming months. A coffee morning in the
Clitheroe Town .Council chamber, by kind permission of the Mayor, proved very successful. This was timed to be in conjunction with the exhibition in the library, which continues until the end of the month.
Vice-chairman Jeff Cowl
ing’s photograph of Gaping Ghyll from the chamber is featured on the glossy front page of the current edition of the journal “Cave and Karst Science” magazine. The pho tograph was taken during the August 2002 winch meet of the Craven Pothole Club. The next meeting will fea
ture the judging of the first competition of the year. Prints and slides with an open subject will be consid ered. This is a good evening for
prospective members to attend, as a wide range of members’ interests and activi ties will be shown and analysed by the judge. Later in the autumn, themed com petitions will be held, giving members the challenge of photographing a set subject. Inquiries about membership can be made to the secretary on 01200 423474.

gone back to school, sum mer is officially over. The NWTB is keen to
find out where the North West’s favourite day out is and will scour the far cor ners of the region in order to find it. The tourist board wants

www.visitnorthwest.co.uk and simply following the instructions on the home page. The search has been
launched as part of the run up to the NWTB’s Chair man’s Tourism Awards - in the “Oscars” for the North West tourism industry. This year's prestigious

weather presenter, will pre sent the awards at the cere mony that is expected to attract more than 250 guests.
