stars after surviving car accident in Vase build-up

By CRAIG SALMON

CLITHBROE player-boss Lee Sculpher will be hop ing to shake-off the effects of a shocking car accident in time for the Blues’ Carlsberg PA Vase clash with Ware on Saturday. Sculpher and his assis

tant Dave Sargent were travelling along the M6 last Saturday when their car was hit from behind, spinning them across three

lanes. Fortunately, the pair,

who were returning from a planned scouting mission on Ware, escaped without being seriously injured. Sculpher said: “We were

on our way down to watch Ware but we then found out their game was post poned so we turned back. “It was a bit of a shock

to say the least. We went across three lanes and the car was written-off. “We were very fortu

He added: “I t ’s just

whether the stiffness sub sides. It’s not serious but I suppose it’s when you head the ball and things like that.

“We’ll just have to see

how it goes and how I feel later in the week. “I t ’s a game I want to

play in, obviously, but the bottom line is, we have to put out a team which is fit and able.” The Blues go into the

unknown on Saturday as they know nothing about their Ryman League Sec ond Division opponents. Sculpher added: “We go

down to Ware, i t ’s never easy playing away and it’s also the first time that we have not been able to see one of our opponents play because of postponements. “So really, we’re going

into the unknown on Sat urday. “We will just have to

nate. I ’m counting my lucky stars after that one.” The swashbuckling cen

tre half rates himself at 50/50 to make Saturday’s game.

concentrate on our own performance and let the opposition worry about us. But that’s what we do in any case. “I believe they are in the same division as Abingdon

Town, who we beat 3-0 in last season’s competition. “But we’ll go into the

to what we have done over the last two seasons. “We got to the semi

game full of confidence. We’re on a 15-game unbeaten run and hopeful ly we’ll continue that run.” The Vase always cap

tures the town’s imagina tion because of the club’s proud record in the compe tition in recent seasons. Finalists at Wembley in

1996 and semi-finalists and quarter-finalists in the last two seasons respectively, Sculpher knows only too well what the tournament means to the supporters. He added: “Everyone

looks forward to the com petition. I t creates an extra buzz around the club and that’s, probably down

finals and the quarter finals in the past two sea sons and beat some good teams along the way. “We’ve already beaten

Bedlington, who were one of the fancied teams, this season in the competition, so there is that buzz. “What you tend to get

in the Vase is that teams are unknown quantities. “When you play in the

league, supporters come on to the ground expecting us to beat your Flixtons and your Glossop North Ends etc. “But in the Vase, you

just don’t know how good the opposition are.”

Chairman Burgess worried fixture back-log could lead to burn-out at Shawbridge

By CRAIG SALMON

CLITHEROE chairman Dave Burgess has blasted the organisation behind this season’s North West Counties’ League fixture list. The Blues go into Satur

day’s Carlsberg FA Vase showdown away to Ryman League side Ware knowing they are heading for a fix ture pile-up. Since Clitheroe’s last out

ing - a 2-0 win over Ather ton Collieries on December 28th - they have had three games called-off. And by the time the next

league game is played, Clitheroe will have gone almost a month without a league game. Burgess said: “We’ve had three games called-off and

If we don’t w a tch i t th e n we could be playing four games in a week like last year, and then you’re looking a t burn-out.

already, it’s going to cause us a massive fixture pile-up. “I can’t understand why

we don’t play more mid week games earlier in the season. “We play midweek

games right up until Sep tember but as mild as the weather has been in Octo ber, November and Decem ber, then I can’t understand why we don’t get more games played. “If you look at it, we

have cup games this week end and on Tuesday, so it’s going to be the 25th of this

Knockout entries deadline extended

THE deadline for entries to the Clitheroe and District Pool League individual knockout has been extended until Sunday. All entries must be handed in at the Royal British

Legion club in Clitheroe by 7 p.m. The draw will be made on the night and details will

be published in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times next week. A special meeting has also been convened for play

ers interested in playing for the town pool.teams in the new season. The meeting takes place at the Royal British

Legion club on Sunday, February 2nd, and starts at 2 p.m. All players, existing or new, interested in playing for either of the teams are urged to attend.

month before we will get a league game played this year. “It happens every year. I

think it was the middle of February when we played out first league game of last year. “If we win on Saturday,

which hopefully we will, another league game on’ a Saturday will be taken out to accommodate the next round. “And the league are usu

ally good to us when we have a run in the Vase, and so they give us a clear week

the Second Division and there’s a big incentive for them because they will have a local derby away at either Kendal Town or Barrow if they win.” Apart from himself and

Lee has his eye on Upton Park final

By CRAIG SALMON

CLITHEROE goal machine Lee Cryer is hop ing to bury the ghost of past FA Vase disappointments this year. The 22-goal hit man will

be lining up for the Blues for Saturday’s crunch last 32 Vase tie away at Ryman League Second Division side Ware. And Cryer, a veteran of

Clitheroe’s runs to the semi finals and quarter-finals in the past two seasons, is hop ing his team can go one bet ter this year. Be said: “Obviously, we

memorable, but when we got beat 5-0 in the semi final at Taunton Town, that has to be one of my lowest points in football. “We let ourselves down

but we have a chance to put that right.” The final of the competi

tion is at Upton Park and Cryer admits he would love a crack at playing there, although he is no stranger to playing on football league grounds. . He added: “It would be a

dream to play at Upton Park or any league ground for that matter. “I ’ve actually played

got beat in the semi-finals a couple of years ago, and if you’re going to go that far in the competition then you have to make the final. “Hopefully we can go one

better this year. “The win at Chippenham

in the quarter-finals (Cryer, number 9, is pictured below celebrating one of the goals from.strike partner Neil Spencer) was particularly

game unbeaten run. He added: “We’re looking

forward to it, especially having not played for three weeks. All the lads are itch ing for a game. “We’re in good form. We

haven’t lost since Newcastle Town beat us last year, so we’re confident without being complacent.” The Vase always brings

out a feel good factor around Clitheroe, and Cryer admits it is some thing which doesn’t go amiss among the players. “Vase week is always spe-

against Fulham for Leigh RMI in the first round of the FA Cup in 1999. “We drew 1-1 at Craven

Cottage live on Sky Sports but lost 2-0 back at Leigh. “It was when Kevin Kee

gan was the manager of Fulham.” Cryer is looking forward

to tomorrow’s game and is confident of success, consid ering the club’s current 15-

. cial. The players look for ward to it when it comes around, i t ’s a nice break from the league. “Especially after beating

Bedlington in the last round, we have nobody to fear. “I ’m glad we haven’t

drawn anybody from oiir league, but we will know what to expect on Saturday and come 3 p.m., I’m sure Scully will have us fired up.”
