them this current version’s improved interior and sleeker looks, not to mention the tiny city- car market’s growing popularity. Moreover, now that it can claim to be a true five-seater, its strongest sales years may be yet to come. The car itself is no bigger. I t is just that


Suzuki has seen fit to add a three-point ELR seat-belt and a third head restraint to the back seat. Given that the cabin is fairly narrow, however, three adults taking advantage of this facility may find themselves on overly famil­ iar terms. Other improvements include a new “solid-type” hinged and removable rear parcel shelf to enclose a luggage compartment accessed by a redesigned tailgate opening han­ dle. There are also more interior stowage spaces, fresh trim colours and redesigned clear lens headlamps, so that Suzuki anoraks can recognise the latest car. Otherwise, it is as you were, this being the


car that was originally designed by General Motors. The American giant owns a substan­ tial shareholding in Suzuki and demanded an involvement when the time came to upgrade the appeal of the original first-generation Wagon R+ for the demands of a new millenni­ um. The extra money and resource shows in the finished product, also being sold by GM’s British subsidiary Vauxhall with Agila badg- ing and a slightly different engine. At a stroke, the GM input removed much of


the oddity factor that put so many British buyers off the original Wagon R+. When the boxy little shape becomes almost as common as a Corsa, you will be able to buy one and look the neighbours straight in the eye.


Whatever you think of the styling, -


you hove to admit that packaging is one of the car's major strong points


Eight inches longer and eight inches wider


than its predecessor, the latest Wagon R+ is still a tiny little thing, 4.7 inches shorter than the dinky little Ford Ka. Nevertheless, it has five doors, can easily accommodate four full- sized adults and boasts enough versatility to qualify for a place among the new breed of supermini-based micro-MPVs. Although the profile of the car looks little


different from the quirky oripnal, the edges have been smoothed, making it look less like something assembled from a Meccano kit. There is a much greater feeling of quality about the interior too - although plastic is still the dominant thema Still, you would expect that from a car costing £7,975 on the road in GL form (the only guise on offer), a figure that enables the Suzuki to represent good value against its Vauxhall counterpart with compa­ rable equipment levels taken into account. This is despite the fact that its 75 b.h.p. 1.3- litre 16-valve petrol engine is slightly more powerful and more frugal. Expect over 36 m.p.g., even around town. . Whether you like the boxy looks or not, you


have to admit that packaging is one of the car’s major strong points. According to the designers, the idea is to “combine the compact dimensions of a weekday runabout with the versatility of an estate car for weekend trips away or shopping expeditions.” Of more relevance to mosh owners, of


course, will be the sheer roominess that has come from the designer’s efforts to make the interior as flexible as possible. Headroom, for example, is enormous thanks to the upright styling. That box-like shape also means an abundance of shoulder space. As for safety, Suzuki has done.its best to


impress; twin airbags, side-impact bars in the front doors and seat-belt pre-tensioners Mme on every car. Having said that, there is no denying the feeling of ; vulnerability some dri­ vers may feel behind the wheel, due mostly to, the car’s diminutive size. You just have to get

Impian is impishly good fun to drive. The first thing you will notice is how well the sus­ pension suppresses the usual bump and thump of the average British road surface. Up the speed a little more and the story remains the same. The Proton still feels supple at speeds which the engine is quite unhappy with.
