In An Attempt To Keep Sales Strong, Peugeot’s 206 Now Offers More For Less In Special Edition 206 Rallye. Jonathan Crouch Checks It Out...

y anyone’s standards, the little 206 has proved to be a huge success for Peugeot. Hence the introduction o f special edition


1.1 and 1.4-litre Look models with standard air conditioning and extra kit for around the same money as the LX models on which they’ re based. Which means that the three-door 1.1-litre petrol- powered Look variant costs a reasonable £8,595 (as opposed to £8,495 for the equivalent LX model). Plus there’s a five-door version for £9,095. If you want 1.4-litre power, the prices are £9,095 and £9,595 for three and five-door versions respectively. As well as air con, a 60/40-split rear seat, three rear head restraints and a three-point centre rear seatbelt, the Look gets the usual LX bits and pieces, which include power steering, twin airbags, remote central locking, electric front windows, a height-adjustable steering wheel, tinted glass, a stereo cassette player with remote steering wheel controls, a pollen filter and split­ folding rear seats. It also gets body coloured door handles, mirrors and number plate surrounds. On the road, traction is excellent and it’s possible to get into a fluid driving rhythm that few other small cars could sustain. The 1.1-litre engine fitted to the Look isn’t particularly fast or refined (rest to


sixty takes 15.1s on the way to 98mph) but they are extremely frugal (expect to average over 45mpg in this model). If you want even greater parsimony, you’ ll have to buy a 206 HDi, but the price differential is such that you’d need to do £10,000 miles per year for over 6 years before the diesel started paying for itself back. Residual values are a different matter, however, swinging the pendulum back in favour o f the diesel car.


In summary, the 206 Look is inexpensive without ever feeling cheap. It’s definitely worth a gander. But wait, there’s more. For a limited period only, buyers in Burnley and the surrounding area have the opportunity to get their hands on the special edition Peugeot 206 1.4-litre 3-door Rallye.
