Lucky Karen wins prize for new home

A BIG win for Mrs Karen Minshull could not have come at a better time. The de-luxe shower and shower

cabinet from UK Bathroom Ware house she won in a recent East Lan cashire Newspapers competition will come in very useful in the Barrow home she and her husband recently moved into and ate busy doing up. "It is perfect timing," said Mrs Minshull, who is also busy setting up an outside catering company. Mrs Minshull, who has moved

from Bury, added: "I had given up entering competitions because I never won anything. “I don't know why I suddenly

Pictures say more than many words

MEMBERS of Ribblesdale Camera Club saw the cur rent Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union illus trative print folio at their recent meeting. This category is new and combines the previous natur

al history and record sections. There is logic about this grouping as both subjects

require the final image to be very close to the image seen through the viewfindere at the moment of exposure. Both categories are “true” photographs with no

manipulation, although retouching and printing can be done through a computer. The quality of most of the prints was superb, with an

interesting mixture of wild birds, flowers, insects and, by contrast, motorsport. The taped commentary was not felt to be helpful, which gave an opportunbity for club members to make

their comments.' Next weeek, the InterClub Photographic Alliance

Colour Print Folio for the current year will be shown. The meeting is on Tuesday at the clubroom in Ribble Lane, Chatburn and starts at 7-30 p. m. Ken Geddes

COUNCIL officials have been urged to get their skates on to complete the redevelopment

of

Clitheroe’s skate park. At a meeting of Ribble '

Valley’s Community Com mittee, Mr Chris Hughes, the borough’s leisure and tourism manager, asked members to agree in princi- ' pie to the construction of the new park so work could start. .

He added that if there

were any delays now then the park would not be oper ational by the summer. Designs for the new park

show a bigger facility with a total of 11 ramps and a roof over four of them. A report to committee said the plan was to carry out

the work in two phases, with the installation of the roof following the construc tion of the park because it is the subject of a planning application. Mr Hughes told council

lors that the roof could be added a t a later stage, adding that it the plan was turned down the park would go-ahead a “much- enhanced” open air park. Coun. Frank Dyson

(Clitheroe) said the plan should be put into opera tion “as fast as possible” and Coun. Paul Adnitt (Clitheroe) urged all involved to “get their skates on”. Members agreed to offer a lease to Trinity for the operation of the new facility.

‘No’ to workshop barn conversion

THE recommendation to refuse an appli cation to convert a barn into a joinery workshop and home has been upheld, despite support for the scheme from some

councillors. Ribble Valley Borough Council Plan

ning and Development Committee heard that the plan would provide local employ ment and accommodation for a local fam

ily. Coun. Rosie Elms (Bowland, Newton

and Slaidburn) then proposed the appli cation be passed. Members were told that the the site, on

Smalden Lane, Slaidburn, was in an ele vated position and that the development would have a detrimental impact on an area of outstanding natural beauty. Coun Frank Dyson (Clitheroe) added

that although the case for development was a plausible one, the objections to it overrode it, one of which being that once completed the house could be sold. The proposal to accept the plan was

then modified to include the condition that the house and workshop could never

be sold separately. However, the committee voted by seven

votes to six to reject the proposal, then voted to follow the recommendation that the application be refused.
