Marx Brothers’ double bill: "A Night at the
Opera" and “A Day at the Races”(U) January 19th at 7 p.m. Grand Cinema
THIS double bill of Marx Brothers comic genius cele brates the Ribble Film Club’s new season of films. “A Night at the Opera” is
said to be one of the most hilarious movies ever made. This classic farce featuring the outrageous genius of the Marx Brothers is a chance to see some of their best bits, woven together seam lessly in a story of high soci ety, matchmaking and chaos. In order to bring two young lovers together, brothers Groucho, Chico and Harpo must sabotage an opera performance fea turing the classic sequence when Groucho piles as many people as possible into a ship’s stateroom. “A Day at the Races” is
the Marx Brothers at their popular peak in terms of their own comic material and timing. The story finds Groucho, Chico and Harpo helping to save a sanitarium from financial ruin, and from the town villain who wants to turn it into a casi no.
The film has some of the
trio’s funniest and most memorable sequences and a dazzling horserace at the cli max. Newly-released prints of

“Tom’s Midnight Garden”; Library Theatre, Manches ter, until January 25th
BEFORE Pottermania, one of the most popular children’s books was “Tom’s Midnight Garden” by Philippa Pearce. This tells the tale of a lonely boy
staying in an old house now divided into flats. He hears the old grandfather clock in
the hall strike 13 and this leads him into a mysterious garden where he befriends
a girl called Hattie, but there is some thing strange. The garden no longer exists in Tom’s
time and Hattie is a child of the Victo rian age, so the story is of the time- slip/fantasy genre and about children’s need for friends and growing up. Ben Elliot and Kirsten Parker handle
the two main parts well, believable as children. The supporting cast play a number of roles successfully but they also act as the chorus. Recent Library Christmas produc
tions have developed a dramatic use of a chorus to change the scenes and also
to act as a reinforcement of the action. David Wood’s adaptation is faithful to
the original and makes good use of the device of Tom’s letters to his brother, Peter, to move the plot forward. Set design by Jamie Vartan makes
