Any car that weighs in at 2355kg but which can still hit 60 m.p.h. in 5.4 seconds is probably either a Bentley or a Cayenne Turbo. It will run on to a top speed of 165 m.p.h., but generating big power and headline grabbing velocities is the easy part. The


Cayenne Turbo also has to drive like a Porsche. Such a tall, heavy vehicle is never going to


handle like a low-slung sports car but the Cayenne Turbo is nevertheless an impressive showing. You need to feel your way to its lim­ its, overcoming every instinct that tells you to back off as you enter the corner, trusting the Cayenne’s chassis and gumball Pirelli P-Zero Rossa tyres to deliver you safely at the other end. Failing that, the Turbo is fitted with Porsche’s PSM stability management.

model opts for around the rear valance is an effective antidote to the Turbo’s saggy-bot- tomed look caused by the body-coloured rear apron. Porsche has thankfully resisted the tempta­


tion to attempt to cram seven seats into the Cayenne body and as a result the interior is pleasantly spacious with more luggage space than its direct rivals and plenty of leg and headroom for five passengers. The quality of fit and finish is superior to


anything Porsche has produced to date, with a beautifully designed, if surprisingly conserv­ ative, fascia. The Cayenne Turbo is a towering achieve­


ment, especially for a company new to the lux­ ury 4x4 market. The styling divides opinion, but few can

have any cause for complaint regarding the engineering, the performance and the handling capabilities of the turbocharged Cayenne. The sheer overtaking presence of this mon­


ster of a car and the shock value of accelerat­ ing at such an unlikely rate endow the Cayenne with huge giggle factor. As a feel-good car, not a great deal can touch


it. A Porsche yes, but a sports car, no. One sus­


pects the company will be delighted with that outcome. ,

quicker in fact than the S-TYPE with which it shares an engine. This is due to the aluminium X J ’s twin- kletoes performance on the scales. The XJ 4.2 SE will not attract the


headlines of the entry-level XJ6 or the range-topping XJR. Neither will it sell as well as the entry-level eight- cylinder car, the XJ 3.5. The 1.8-litre LPG versions have proved to be quiet hits among those look­ ing to really run a Volvo on the cheap. Leather trim is now standard on all models,


although if that doesn’t really appeal, a quiet word in your Volvo dealer's ear will land you a cloth-trimmed S specification S or V40 with £500 knocked off the asking price. This means that the S40 range starts at just .013,980 for the 1.6S with the V40 estate another .01,000 on top of that figure. The leather trim was worth over £900 but was already featured on the SE and Sport Lux trim levels. To assuage prospective buyers of those


models, Volvo now includes an electric driver’s seat. Sport and Sport Lux versions now fea­ ture white side repeaters, bigger 17 in. alloy wheels and sports dials. The options list has also come in for some


attention. Whereas Volvo used to offer a satel­ lite navigation system for £1,200, there is now a cheaper ‘Business Pack’ which bundles together satellite navigation, cruise control and an electric driver’s seat. Prices have gen­ erally been trimmed right across the range, with the S40 2.0T having over £800 shaved from its sticker figure. Even the most ardent Volvo fans will con­


cede the S and V40 models are not the freshest faces on the block. Many customers will, how­ ever, trade voguish styling in exchange for quality build, strong engines, impressive stan­ dard equipment levels, attractive pricing and an impeccable safety record: Volvo attributes that are as relevant today as they ever were.
