later that he felt able to take the band on the road and the rest, as they say, is history. After featuring in

countless radio and televi sion broadcasts, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra went on to perform in numerous sell-out concerts through out the Middle East, Canada and Europe. Tony Bennett, Johnny

Mathis, Matt Munro, Petula Clark and Dame Vera Lynn are just some of the famous names who have appeared with the orchestra. The orchestra’s reper

toire has grown over the years and now features not only the music of many of the great big bands of the past, but a growing number of its own original arrangements. Under the leadership of

A magical trip is awaiting you

The Sleeping Beauty; Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays; June 17th-21st

BIRMINGHAM Royal Ballet will return to its home in the North-West from June 17th-21st with Sir Peter Wright’s spectacular production of “The Sleeping Beauty” .

With music by Tchaikovsky, it tells

the often-told story of a princess who pricks her finger on a spindle and falls asleep for 100 years. It will take audiences at the Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays, on a magical journey to an enchanted forest where

good triumphs over evil through a sin gle kiss. Set to one of Tchaikovsky's most

famous scores, Peter Wright's spectac ular production has sumptuous designs by Philip Prowse and an array of storybook characters including Red Riding Hood and Puss-n-Boots. The drama and magic of a favourite

childhood story is brought to life with lavish sets, 150 beautiful hand-sewn costumes and a cast of over 80.

A great ‘Choice’ for the Exchange

HAROLD Brighouse’s comedy “Hobson’s Choice” is one of the best-loved Manches ter plays, so I was surprised to learn The Royal Exchange had never done it before. Trevor Peacock makes a welcome 19th

appearance in this theatre as the irascible, heavy-drinking Hobson, owner of a small boot and shoe shop run by his three daugh

ters under the direction of the eldest, Mag gie. Joanna Riding gives a clever perfor mance as the forceful Maggie, a character

apparently modelled on the playwright’s sister. She is well supported by Harri

Earthy and Kirsten Parker as her two sis ters, who are desperate for an escape into marriage and horrified at Maggie’s decision to marry the illiterate and timid Willy

Classic Proms Concert; Leighton Hall; June 28th

THE historic home of the world-renowned Gillow furniture-making family will resound to the sounds of the classics and the spectacle of a fireworks display. Leighton Hall, near Carnforth, is the

Mossop, who is a skilled bootmaker. As Willy Mossop John Thomson steals

the show. His facial expressions, body lan guage and comic timing have the audience laughing uproariously, notably in the scene where Maggie proposes to him and in the second act when, on their wedding night, he tries to steel himself to join her in the bed room. The staging is, as always, superb and

deftly handled. The change of scene from Maggie and Willy’s cellar flat to Hobson’s

living room in the middle of Act two brought a spontaneous round of applause.

Braham Murray has directed and ensured that, although this is a "period piece”, it is as funny as ever.

PIPPA MUNRO ‘Proms’ concert is set to go out with a bang!

venue for a Classic Proms Concert on Sat urday, June 28th. The Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra will play Puccini, Elgar and Strauss and a variety of Proms favourites.

The concert ends with a firework finale

to Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture. Tickets at £18.50 are available on 0845 644 2355.
