GREAT days were enjoyed in Clitheroe over the weekend. Street entertainment at this year’s festi
val included favourites from the folk dance scene, including Argomeles l3ance, who were joined by the Mossley Morris Men and Southport Sword. Colour and rhythm were brought to the
market and Castle Street by Baybeat, a car nival street band from Morecambe, while there were also performances from the Black burn People’s Choir. Members of Huddersfield’s Faceless The
atre Company came in three guises - bossy bureaucrats, punctuation marks and monster wheelie bins which sprinkled water over delighted children.
The theme of the Horse and Bamboo
Youth Theatre performance was “Our Roots, Our Community” . Workshops and rehearsals had taken place
over an eight-day period with yoimgsters from Clitheroe, Simonstone and Bowland, culmi nating in a 20-minute performance. On the music front, the Friday evening con
cert starred Bernard Wrigley and the Oldham Tinkers, with these well loved performers bringing in a near-capacity crowd. A big hit were two Asian musicians with an
international reputation, Lancaster trio How- den Jones and Taffinde, and previous festival favourite, Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies. On behalf of the organisers, Mr Steve Rag-
nail said: “We were confident that the Friday concert would do well in the town and we thank everyone for coming. However, while we are happy to provide what local audiences want, we do not like to just ‘play it safe’ all weekend and we try to put together concerts over the weekend that show the best local and national acts -
trust us, come to these shows,
even if you have not heard of the artists before, and you will not be disappointed. We would like to thank our sponsors which include Castle Cement, Dawsons, Kibble Val ley Borough Council, Clitheroe Town Coun cil, LCC Youth and Community Service and the Rural Development Fund.”
