Sadness at death of popular teacher (52)

by John Turner

STAFF at several Ribble Valley Schools have been touched by the death, at the age of 52, of popular teacher M r s Sandra Coulter. Mrs Coulter (pictured

right), who had taught at St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, for 15 years, had also been a member of the s taf f at Bowland High School, St Wilfrid’s CE High School, Blackburn, Ribbles- dale High School Technology College and Rhyddings High School, Oswaldtwistle. Her husband, Mr John Coulter, is a senior member of the staff at the latter. Mrs Coulter, of Warwick

Drive, Clitheroe, died on Sun day after a long illness. She had been teacher of

girls’ PE at St Augustine’s, a post to which she was appointed in September 1988. Over the years, she had taught hundreds of children throughout East Lancashire. During her 15 years at St

SUTCLIFFE Janet

June 13th, 2003. Happy 50th Birthday.

Have a wonderful day. All our love, Geoff, Cassie, Garreth and Glenn.

Concerns over

park footpaths CONCERNS about the state of some footpaths in a Clitheroe park

are to be raised with Ribble Valley Borough Council. Members o f Clitheroe Town

Council raised worries about some of the paths in Brungerley Park which they feel are in need of repair and resurfacing. The comments came in response

to a le t te r from the borough’s Leisure and Tourism Manager, Mr Chris Hughes, who said that areas of the park were in need of refur bishment and that an improve ment scheme was being developed, in consultation with interested parties, to spend some £35,000 of funding.

Other concerns noted by the

town council included the need for some tree felling and replanting, repairs to railings, as well as the need for extra dog waste bins and litter bins.

Pendle Club

W IN N E R S of the bridge session at Pendle Club, Clitheroe, were Mrs Eileen Wood and partner and

Miss Pat Hargreaves and partner. Domino winners were Mrs M.

Davies, Mrs V. Giles and Mrs D. Knight. Solo whist winners were M r A. Leonard, Mrs S. Holden and Mrs E. Lancaster. Bridge takes place on Mondays

at 1-30 p.m., solo whist on Mon days at 7-30 p.m., dominoes on Fri days at 7 p.m. and line dancing on Thursdays at 1-30 p.m. New mem bers are welcome to attend any of the events.

Castle Cement’s new fuel plans on public display

DETAILS about plans by Clitheroe company Castle Cement to burn an alterna tive fuel derived from abat toir waste will be on public display on Wednesday. Local residents are being

given the chance to find out more about the compa n y ’s plan to reduce its reliance on coal by using an additional fuel at its Rib- blesdale works. In March, the Clitheroe

A d v ert ise r and Times revealed proposals from Castle Cement to burn a meat and bone meal residue created by the ani mal by-product process, a move which the firm said would improve emissions from one of its two stacks. Known as Agricultural

Waste Derived Fuel, it is produced by sterilising and grinding abattoir waste, which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill sites. Fibrous in appearance, AW D F feels like damp sand.

M r Gareth Price, gener

al manager at the Ribbles- dale works, is keen to demonstrate the environ mental benefits of using this fuel type.

He said: “Once again we

are able to safely use the energy content of a waste product to help fuel our kiln that would otherwise go to landfill. The AWDF will be entirely consumed in the very high tempera tures of our cement manu facturing system in the same manner that coal is currently.” Local residents are being

invited to attend St Mary’s Parish Church Hall between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday to view Cas tle Cement’s exhibition. It will explain the firm’s pro posal to use Agricultural Waste Derived Fuel in its

kiln. A team of staff will be , oh hand to answer ques tions and talk to individu als in more detail. Castle Cement has

already held detailed talks with the Environment Agency, Lancashire Coun ty Council and Ribble Val ley Borough Council out lining its recommendations to use AWDF. A newsletter has also

been distributed to people living within five miles of the works.

Former teashop proprietor Margaret dies, aged 72

T H E former p ro p r i etor of a Clitheroe teashop has died at the age of 72. Mrs Margaret Fairclough

(nee Haworth) had lived all her life in and around the Ribble Valley. Bom in Read in 1931, Mrs

CUSACK Hayley

June 9th,.2003.

Happy Birthday and best wishes.

Auntie M a r y and Hunky Dave*

Happy 21st Hayley. Love and best

wishes, Sheila, Adam and Lauren.

Fairclough (pictured right) attended Read school and then Clitheroe Grammar School from 1941 to 1949. She attained the Higher School Certificate in 1949 and gained a place to study nursing at the Middlesex Teaching Hos pital, London. Before the war, her father

was employed by the Thomas Cook travel agency in Bum- ley, a position which entitled him to reduced fares. In 1939, the World Fair was to be held in New York and he managed to obtain tickets for his family to make the crossing in April, 1939, to N ew York on the Cunard White Star liner Bri tannic from Liverpool. The main purpose of the

trip was to v isit Mrs Fair- clough’s two aunts, who had emigrated to the US and Canada some years before. This event was truly a high point in her life, and in later years she often recalled the excitement the family and, indeed, the entire community of Read had felt in preparing for their departure. The return crossing was on

the Queen Mary, which was then just three years old and held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing. The

splendour and luxury and art deco style of the liner made a lasting impression on Mrs Fairclough, which she often reminisced about throughout her life. She also recalled that the whole return trip for a fam i ly of four in a tourist class cabin was just £401 She did not complete her

training in London and, instead, returned to work in Burnley until her marriage in 1956 to Peter Fairclough, when they took a sub-post office in Carr Hall, Nelson. In 1963, and now with three, children, her husband became' a partner in a wholesale paper merchant firm in Blackburn and they moved to Great Harwood. In 1977, however, she

returned to the Ribble Valley, when the fam i ly moved to

Whalley. In the same year, she fulfilled her life's ambition and opened a teashop, Peg's

P an try in K in g Lane, Clitheroe. A t that time there were v e ry few cafes in Clitheroe, and Peg's Pantry was an instant hit with those looking for a quiet chat over a good cup of a coffee. E ve rythin g was home

made and her chocolate cake and trifle became legendary. Her regular customers were, typically, from the older gen eration. They could recall life in Clitheroe in earlier times and would often share their

memories with her over a cup of tea. In 1982, she and her hus

band also purchased an old building in Parson Lane. Fol lowing extensive renovation, they converted this into a larger cafe, serving full meals. I t became known as The Old Toll House and they ran this with their children alongside Peg's Pantry for a period.

During the latter part of

the ’80s, her husband devel oped a number of properties in the Ribble Valley, most notably The Long Buildings, Sawley, which were converted from a derelict state into a striking and highly desirable

row of sought-after proper ties.

;

. More recently, Mrs Fair clough and- her husband retired to Bashall, where Margaret, who had always had a keen interest in her remarkable family history, started to research and record it. She took matters into her

own hands and published the book, “Maggie - a Story of Lancashire Folk” .

Augustine's, Mrs Coulter took on other posts of respon sibility, including roles as

ship o f Clitheroe Cricket, Bowling and Tennis Clubs. She coached gymnastics to

young children a t T r in ity Youth Club. St Augustine’s headteacher

M r Anthony McNamara, said: "Sandra was a warm and enthusiastic colleague. She was committed to getting the very best out of the children. She gave endless hours of her own time to a wide range of extra-curricular sporting activities. “ Her lo v e ly smile and

COMPACT co-ordinator, to raise the achievement of Year 10 students, and work experi ence manager. Outside school Mrs Coul

ter was active in community sports, an interest she shared with her husband and two sons, Simon and Matthew. She was a founder member

of Clitheroe Netball League and, for several years, Mrs Coulter was its president. She represented the sport at coun ty level and was a qualified umpire. Her interests also included tennis, and member

appreciation of a good joke made her great company. Sandra’s gentle manner made her popular with pupils and staff alike. She bore her illness with great courage. We loved her dearly." Prayers and services for

Mrs Coulter have‘been held at the school throughout the week. The funeral service will be

held at 12-30 pm tomorrow at Clitheroe Parish Church and will be followed by inter ment at A l l Saints Church yard, Pendleton. The family has requested

donations for the East Lan cashire Hospice or Cancer Research U K in lieu of flow ers.
