Sheep ahoy — as Clitheroe town centre is invaded by flocks of eager visitors

by Robbie Robinson '

CLITHEROE has been completely "baawled" over by sheep.

In the first-ever SheepFest, traders

joined residents and Great Days Festi val organisers to celebrate the return of sheep to the Valley’s fields. Many joined in the fun. As the weekend

progressed, there was a mini sheep explosion

with more and more traders entering into the spirit of the event. So successful was the SheepFest that organ

judged last week. There were four categories; best sheep created by children up to the age of 12; the most artistic or creative sheep; the fun niest sheep; and the smallest visible sheep.

Dozens took p a r t in the competition, Judges were impressed by the range of skills

used by participants and amazed a t the humour and the clever ways the sheep theme had been applied. Choosing the winners proved far more difficult than anticipated, but eventually a shortlist was composed from which the winners were selected. The best sheep by an under-12 was .dis

played in the window of his Whalley Road home by Jake Maher. His sleeping sheepdog, counting sheep in its dreams, was a clever and simply executed display, with the sheep sus pended and mobile above the snoozing dog. The most artistic or creative sheep was

almost next door. Brian Nuttall, of Whalley Road, made a sheep under a parasol, standing on a haybale using simple materials and meth ods to make a true character. There were funny sheep in every category,

so it was difficult to separate them. However, the hilarious, full- sized tableau of a drunken

Stella Brandolini-Whalley, of Corporation Street, whose tiny black sheep was perched on a small grass mound. She had even provided a magnifying glass in the window of her home so it could be seen more clearly. I t was sur rounded by a collection of clever sheep themes by her daughter Angela, who was second in the under-12s category. As well as the second prize awards in each

category, 15 other entries were highly com mended by the judges.

Visitors and locals have remarked on the

appearance of the sheep on the streets and shops round the Valley. The lively responses and support mean that

the SheepFest is set to become a permanent item on the Ribble Valley summer calendar.
