Have fun and help to fund cancer research

M0 MOWLAM says: “One in three people in this coun try either have or will get cancer and more than 40,000 of them this year will be women diagnosed with breast cancen.Cancer Research UK is leading the way in under standing cancer with a view to getting (his scourge under control... help them to help (is by giving money, support or time - it all counts!” (S)

CANCER Research UK is urging the residents of East Lancashire to ‘Get In ;The Pink’ as it starts the countdown to its pink-themed fund-raising drive for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, throughout October. Cancer Research UK, the nation’s leading

funder of breast cancer research, wants peo ple to sign up now for a Get-in the Pink- fund-raising pack. I t is full of fun ideas how to help the charity fund better treatments and cures for breast cancer. For more information on how to ‘Get in the

Pink’ or to register for Stride for Life, call your local Cancer Research UK fund-raising office on 08701 602040. Breast cancer is the most common cancer

for women in the UK. Dr Lesley Walker says: “More women than

ever are being diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and that looks set to continue. “Each year around 41,000 women are diag

nosed.”: “Because of this, preventing, treating and

curing breast cancer remains a priority for Cancer Research UK.” Fortunately, death rates have fallen by 22

per cent over the p a s t decade thanks to improvements in treatment and the introduc tion of the national screening programme. An even more dramatic decline of 30 per cent has been seen in young and middle-aged women over the same period. •

Dr Walker adds: “Although more women

THE OPERA BABES (Rebecca Knight, left, and Karen England) say: “All women should know how to spot any irregularities in their breasts. We’re thrilled to be back ing Cancer Research UK’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and wc’li be wearing our pink ribbons with pride. We’re also thrilled to be taking part in Stride For Life.”(S)

are diagnosed with breast cancer, more are being successfully treated. We need help to fund science that will make a real difference to women’s lives.” Cancer Research UK supports a broad pro

gramme of research into breast cancer, cover ing the cause and development, prevention,

and have fun while helping to cure breast can cer faster.

■ There are many ways to “Get in the Pink” :

. •' ■ •Why not get together with' a few friends or

work colleagues and host a pink party with pink champagne, pink fairy cakes and pink ice-cream? - ; Or negotiate a “Get in the Pink” day at

work, school or college and get sponsored for wearing pink from head to toe.:;' : Stand out from the crowd in one of the cam

paign’s Get in the Pink (£8) or Precious (£10) T-shirts or organise a girl’s night out in pink wigs (£10). And if pink wigs do not appeal then’why

not buy a pink pig? “Birthdays” stores throughout the UK will

be stocking a limited edition Miss Piggy badge in two designs from the beginning of October.

- 1 “Alternatively you can pop into your local

Cancer Research UK shop and pick up a pink ribbon, the classic symbol of breast cancer awareness, for a suggested donation of £1. Another way to get involved is by joining

Stride for Life, Cancer Research UK’s biggest fund-raising event of the month. Stride for Life is a national series of 10k

sponsored walks, designed for people of all ages and abilities, which will take place across the UK during October. Our picture shows actress and musician

Toyah Wilcox who says: “I have friends and family who have been affected by breast can cer so I urge you all to get behind Cancer Research UK and take part in Stride for Life. Taking part is a challenge within the reach of everyone. “Strides will be held in some of the coun

try’s most beautiful countryside. I can guar antee that it will be a lot easier than walking in the jungle and you won’t have to do any tri als - apart from raising money!”

astating shadow. Breast cancer is one of the few diseases

THE excellent lifestyles typical of the Ribble Valley, generally accepted as being well above the regional average, have a sad and, for many families, a dev

which are associated with a good standard of living. So local women of all ages have every reason to keep on the alert. Of course, they have no greater chance of

becoming a victim than women elsewhere - but almost certainly they have no less a chance either. In Britain, some 13,000 women and 90 men

die from breast cancer each year. But research and emphasis on early diagnosis is helping the fight back.

VAL SINGLETON says: “The battle against breast can cer is something we can all help with. Last year Cancer Research UK spent £15 million on breast cancer research - let’s sec if we can make it more (his year!” (S)
