A 61 b.h.p. 1.1-litre opens proceedings at prices from £7,495, although the mid range 75 b.h.p. 1.4-litre petrol with the SensoDrive gearbox also looks good value, priced from £8,995. For ultimate economy, the 1.4-litre HDi models (from £8,495) will be the first port of call, while the 110 b.h.p. VTR version marks the top of the range. Powered by a 1.6-litre 16v engine and retailing at £10,995, it will eventually have to give ground to the 130 b.h.p. VTS model.

-8- entry- level versions were not always
the most wonderful choices in the range. Quite what BMW was thinking of when
it plumbed a 1.8-litre engine,that generated a feeble 105 b.h.pi into a Five only it knows. Fortunately things have changed since the days when buying ah entry-level model in a BMW range labelled you as nothing more than the most grubbing badge snob. The lat est BMW 520i is a car that may prop up the Five Series range but these days it is a lot more than an ego prop. Now powered by a respectable 2.2-litre

ly high 3,500 r.p.m. which means that you may have to change down to overtake slow- moving traffic or negotiate a sharp incline but the engine is so smooth, linear and eager to rev that you will not consider this such an imposition; especially when you have a slick six-speed manual gearbox to palm about. >' Styling apart, the biggest difference
between this generation Five Series and its predecessor comes in term of ride quality. At motorway speeds, the 520i just obliterates minor irritations such as expansion joints and scabby concrete surfaces with disdain, with only a background murmur entering the cabin. The body itself stays rock steady with only- a slight susceptibility to cross- winds blotting an otherwise pristine copy book. Outright grip while cornering is still superb, but you will experience a little more
roll and a little less eagerness to turn in than you may expect of a Five Series. Part of this can be explained away by the fact that the 520i is currently only available in plush SE trim. The BMW 520i is a car suffused with
intelligence. The advertising strapline that BMW used to introduce the Five Series range, ‘Everything we know about the car. In a car’ may sound a little overblown when considering the entry-level car, but evidence ' of the Munich company’s deep understand ing in this market sector is everywhere. It is not the great leap forward its prede
cessor was - the opposition have narrowed the gap considerably in the intervening years - but there is an argument for putting it straight back onto the top of the podium. With more space, more equipment, better residual values and far superior refinement, it is a convincing proposition.

For the time being, performance
enthusiasts will view the VTR as the C2 to have. With 10 b.h.p. more than its Saxo predecessor and more standard equipment, the £995 premium being asked for the latest VTR model over the old version looks reasonable value. Whichever C2 model you opt for in a
trim range that runs from L through LX, SX, Furio to VTR, you will find a car that maximises its use of space effective ly. Can it appeal to both the budget buy ing family- and the genuine enthusiast? I suspect the answer will be yes.
