AN initiative by local dairy farmers to supply their milk direct to a supermarket chain is being urged on others in the industry by the NFU. It wants dairy farmers nationwide to follow in

the footsteps of the 15 Bowland farmers, whose Bowland Fresh Milk is collected by tanker, bot tled and distributed daily through 26 Booths stores in the North-

West. The Ribble Valley

farmers only launched

their Bowland Fresh scheme a fortnight ago. Actors from the TV .

drama “Bom and Bred” - which was filmed in Downham - Clive Swift and Peter Gunn lent their support to the scheme, sampling some of the products at the official launch and, despite their milk being premium priced at 35p a pint and 64p for two pints, demand is already outstripping supply. This rush to buy Bow

land Fresh lends support to a survey conducted by the NFU among shop pers. It shows that more than 80% of shoppers would willingly pay up to 5p more for their pinta, if they knew the

money was going direct ly to dairy fanners. Said NFU county

chairman'Mr Jim Bir- kett, who also has a dairy farm in Heysham: "This survey and the sales of Bowland Fresh show that shoppers want farmers to get a.fairer' share of the price of a

pint. They do;not want, to see Britain's farmers put‘out of business for the sake of a few pence." The NFU has an on

going campaign against milk processors, which it blames for pushing down the farm-gate price of milk. It claims that some dairy farmers are receiving' less for their milk than it costs them to produce it. On aver age, the NFU says that Britain's farmers receive 16p per litre for milk, putting them at the bot tom of the EU milk price league. In Italy, farmers

receive 22p per litre. Farmers in the Bowland Fresh milk scheme

College link-up bringing the taste of Spain to Manchester

SPANISH and Mexican pupils at Stonyhurst College, near Clitheroe, shared a "lesson" with fellow students at a Manchester comprehen sive school - although everyone stayed in their own classrooms. The six Stonyhurst

pupils, aged mainly 14 and 15, were helping other Year 10 pupils at St Damian’s RC School, near Ashton-under- Lyne, Tameside, to brush up on their GCSE Spanish speaking and listening skills in a first- ever video-conferencing

link-up. . The Manchester

teenagers have been studying Spanish for about three years and will be sitting their GCSE exams next sum

mer. Mr Simon Andrews,

director of studies at Stonyhurst, said: "It was the first language link-up we have done and it went superbly. The pupils had not met before, but got on very well, and held a ques- tion-and-answer session in Spanish." The Stonyhurst

pupils taking part in the lesson were Istaso Lar-

rauri of Bilbao and Car los Abia, of Valladolid, Spain, and Diego Viesca, Santiago del Hoya, Pablo Usobiaga and Jose Pellon, all of

Mexico City. Their counterparts.in

Tameside were Becky Jenkinson, Hannah Vachre, Holly Fox, Jus: tine.Harrop, Kayleigh Glynn and ■ Rachael

Ellis. Mr Peter Jackson,

head of the co-educa- tional 750-pupil St Damian’s, said; "The video-conferencing was a high point of an excel lent partnership over the last four years with Stonyhurst. The link will inspire children’s confidence and develop ment in modern foreign languages and give

■ them an experience of the information technol

ogy of the 21st Century." The two schools have

been in partnership under a Department of Employment and Educa tion (DFEE) initiative to increase co-operation between state and private education. There have been sever-,

al other shared ventures, including inter-school vis its and staff exhanges. Also, a group of St Dami an’s pupils has been on retreat to Stonyhurst and there has been liaison on the maths, English and science curriculum. In a further develop

ment, the college is plan ning to go "international" with its video conferenc ing by setting up a pro ject with a school in Bil bao, Spain, in an exchange of language and listening skills.

louncillors deplore BNP’s choice of Valley rally venue

by Tim Procter.

C O U N C IL LO R S voted against the BNP on Tuesday night - and by subtle implication slammed the farmer who has hired out a field for the weekend's rally. Members of the Rib

ble Valley Borough Council Planning and Development Commit tee effortlessly used council rules to intro duce an additional item to their agenda. ■ A motion deprecating

the fact that the BNP rally was to be held locally

was passed unanimously.

Proposer Coun. Frank Dyson (Clitheroe) said

he was sure people would sympathise with people in the Sawley area, where the rally is to take place. - . "Unfortunately a local

farmer has seen fit to let off a field for the purpose and I understand that the legal position is that neither the council nor the police can prohibit the gathering on private land." This was regrettable,

said Coun. Dyson, espe cially as the long-estab-

■ lished vintage rally was to have been held in a neighbouring field. The organisers' gesture of moving across the road meant that the business

of keeping public order would be somewhat

■ "The situation on the A59 and its verges will not be- particularly healthy,!' forecast Coun.

helped.

Dyson. Seconding,. council

leader Coun. Chris Holtom said he believed that the rally was the party's main annual function and last year was held in Welshpool. They had entered into an agreement to be on pri

vate land. The council had been

looking at the'situation very carefully and the only sanction it had was that, if the BNP broke any rules, action could be

taken. "We will be watch ing carefully on road

'safety and on the general tranquillity of the area for the people who live, work and travel in the vicinity," said Coun. Holtom. Appropriate steps

could be taken at very, short notice and the situ ation was being moni tored day by day. : "It is disappoinitng

that they are coming here and I am particularly anxious that there should be no unsavoury distur- .

bances round the sit& yj But Coun. Holtonffelt

that the situation should be viewed realistically. "We need to be concerned not to over-egg the pud ding," he warned.
