of shopping where, all under one roof, people who like to know how long beef has been hung, people who are strict vegetarians or vegans, people who have allergies or people who are com mitted to organic pro duce can check their con cerns with the actual producers," says Mr Robert Parker, manag ing director of Clitheroe Auction Mart. "We are very pleased

that the market is now set to open after the delays caused by foot and mouth. "This market is mak

ing good news and we are very confident of strong support, as we believe that people will welcome

goods of high quality freshness and produced by a combination of tra ditional skills and mod ern standards." The very modern sur

roundings of the hall lend themselves to the high standards the mart, the retailers and the pub lic will take for granted. There is plenty of room for the necessary refrig erators, chill cabinets and similar equipment. Although Wednesday

evenings see the weekly general goods auction and sale, there is plenty of time and space for the farmers' market to oper ate earlier in the day. There is room for hun

dreds of cars to park out side the building and

access is easy from all

directions. This exciting new

quality-plus-value shop ping opportunity will be a tremendous draw for people from far and wide - there is still plenty of time for autumn tourists to benefit.

The idea raises aware

ness of the positive con tribution agriculture makes to the country side, and there is strong backing from Ribble Val ley Borough Council, Northern Rural Train ing, the Bowland Initia tive and local businesses.

Pub regulars ‘jump to it’ to help raise cash for cancer victim Rebecca (11)

REGULARS at the White Hart pub, Sabden, dug deep into their pockets and helped raise money

for a young cancer victim. A charity night was organised to

follow on from a parachute jump completed by friends Mark Avery, Wayne and Jordan Love, Dave Capstick and Steven Hickey.

A bumper £1,100 was collected 1

in total from the two events and this money will go towards help ing the parents of 11-year-old Rebecca Baxter, of Great Har

wood. Mark is a friend of Rebecca s

family and he enlisted the help of the pub's landlady, Mrs Janine

People before policy* plea leads to councillors approving home bid

COUNCILLORS accepted a planning consultant's plea to "put people before policy" on

a rural housing issue. One member of Ribble Valley

Borough Council's Planning and Development Committee declared: " I am very dubious

I about the whole thing." i However, the committee decided by an eight votes to five decision to allow a former holi day-let only cottage in Easing- ton Road, Slaidburn, to contin ue to be lived in by an employee of the shooting and riding busi ness estate in which it is located.

P & ig d a l e Nutrition

f ' would like to support the farming community in these difficult times in agriculture

1 Speaking on behalf of the busi- | ness, planning consultant Mrs I Janet Dixon indicated that the

employee had an important role in it. Its use for such an occupation was a bigger help to building up the venture than a holiday let. Officials urged refusal of the

. .

application to change the use, say ing that the dwelling was a conver sion to holiday accommodation passed relatively recently. A new building for letting would

probably have not been allowed and permanent residence in the property amounted to creating a dwelling in open countryside. But Coun. Rosemary Elms

(Bowland) said that local employ ment would be kept by allowing the application. "There is always a lack of affordable housing," she

pointed out. Coun. Harry Backhouse

(Waddington) declared that he

did not believe that much of a. precedent would be set by allow ing the use. I t would help tourism - and the applicants had been hon est, which not all owners were. But Coun. Graham Sowter

,< i _ l 1 _12 Ftint m nnl

(Billington) said that they must: enforce their policy of no new dwellings in the countryside. He was supported by Coun. Frank; Dyson (Cltheroe), who said that while he had sympathy with the. personal aspects of the case he was; "dubious about the whole thing". However, the application was;

allowed on a vote. O Two other applications for

use changes of rural properties, from agricultural worker only to ordinary residential, were deferred because reports were not available.
