joined his father, Mr Bernard Hardman, on an ascent of the Mat terhorn, the famous 14,688 f t . (4,478m) mountain, which tow ers above Zermatt in Switzerland. They took the normal

route to the mountain, via the Schwarzsee cable

car, followed by the hike up to the Hornli hut, ■perched high above the

valleys. Above it, the sharp-

edged Hornli ridge leads to the summit, scene of the successful but tragic first ascent by Edward Whymper in 1865. They spent the night

at the hut and left at 4 a.m. the next morning to climb the mountain.

"As a result, we missed the last cable car down to Zermatt, meaning we had to walk all the way back. We eventually reached our campsite for a very late supper and got to bed at 1 a.m." Jack, who is a sixth

form pupil at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, has been rock climbing with his father for five years. They have been to the Alps twice before on holidays together, but it was an ascent of the Grand Teton in the USA last year which whetted Jack’s appetite for the Matterhorn. Mr Hardman said:

"The Grand Teton is not as difficult, but it is a longer route and we were not as well acclimatised." The Matterhorn was

Jack’s first major Alpine route, so Mr Hardman made sure they were well

above us. I t took us six easier peaks at altitude hours to reach the sum-
