include introductory and practitioner level NLP, early bird t'ai chi, yoga, pilates. There will also be
courses on quantum reading, an accelerated learning technique to speed reading and designed to benefit stu dents and document laden managers. They will take place

PARISHIONERS from St James' Church, Clitheroe, are inviting local people to attend a special supper marking the launch of their Alpha course on
Saturday night. The meal, to be held in the
church's Pastoral Centre starting at 7 p.m., is designed to introduce local people to the course, which provides an opportunity to explore the mean
ing of life. Interest in the course has been
heightened recently by the ITV pro gramme "Alpha: Will It Change Their Lives", a 10-part series presented by Sir David Frost and currently being shown on Sunday nights. More than a million people in this
country are thought to have attended Alpha courses at the 7,000 local churches of all denominations which have so far become involved with the
initiative. S t James' is joining with these
churches in a major national advertis ing campaign this month featuring a range of eye-catching Alpha course
posters which will be displayed on bill boards and buses across the UK. The campaign aims to reverse the

decline in attendance at churches up and down the country which has taken
place over the past 20 years. Only 7.5% of the population are
now regular churchgoers, but churches which have already run Alpha courses have reported that congregations have
increased as a result. Alpha, which involves one session a
week for 10 weeks, is a contemporary and practical introduction to the Christian faith. It provides an oppor tunity for participants to make up their own minds about Christianity. Mr Malcolm Cowcn, who is co-ordi
nating the course at St James', said: "Alpha is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to investigate the Christian faith and to look for answers to the big
questions." Saturday night's event is expected to
last until approximately 9-45 p.m. Anyone wanting further informa
tion on the course, or wishing to attend the supper, should contact Mr Cowcn on 01200 442219.
Course teaches about the changes needed to become mature adults
STUDENTS from Oakhill College, Whalley, this week went on a two- day course at Borwick Hall, near Lancaster, to learn how to “stand on
their own two feet”. For the Year 11 pupils it was the
culmination of a year-long series of day workshops co-ordinated by the Salford Diocese Youth Service under the watchful eye of youth officer Mr Bob Beardsworth, who has been connected with the college for a number of years. The course was entitled “Stand
ing On Your Own Two F e et” and covered such topics as caring and
sharing with others, co-operating and valuing teamwork, improving communication skills, understand ing the need to make sound deci sions and self examination, and understanding the changes which need to be made to become a mature
adult. A number of guest speakers |
attended the course. They included Mr Danny Bradley, a lecturer at St Martin’s, College, Lancaster, who | talked about drugs awareness. The group was accompanied by
principal Mr Phil Mahon and year tutor Mr Charles Jepson.

Several councillors
recalled that council poli cy was that homes should be within reasonable dis tance of shops, churches and other community facilities, and these were some way from The Bidd
ings. But others pointed out
that this policy pre-dated the current situation'. People who could get about were now looked after in their own home. Usually only those who were immobile were now going into residential accommodation. Officials noted the
"near facilities" policy, but nevertheless recom mended approval. Speaking after the two-
vote majority in his favour, Mr Ronnan said he respected the views of critics of the location. But he claimed that housing developments would mean that Th'e Sidings would be more central in a few years that it was now. "Whalley is changing very quickly indeed," said
Mr Ronnan. " I t is vital to ensure
that all its facilities move forward with the pace of change if it is to meet the needs of an increasing population."

THE “school run” by parents is to come under police scrutiny.
Officers from the road policing unit based in '
Accrington are to undertake spot check patrols out side all Ribble Valley secondary and primary schools
during this week and next. Their task is to monitor driving standards, sale
parking, seat belt wearing and the behaviour of pupils on tho roads as part of an on-going safety campaign, aimed at reducing collisions involving
children.
