was taken ill during a holiday in Australia in


January. At first it was thought


she had been affected by heat exhaustion, but bowel cancer was diag­ nosed and she was flown home and admitted to Hope Hospital, where she underwent 12 weeks of chemotherapy. Owing to her particu­


lar condition surgery could not be performed. Mrs Rhodes, who


lived in Great Harwood, was a very well known


and prominent local golfer. She was born and


raised in.Oswaldtwistle and when her parents moved to Rishton they all joined the golf club


there. She started playing in


1950 and won the Lan­ cashire Junior Champi­


onship at the age of 13. She spent 20 years at


Rishton Golf Club with both her parents, leaving in 1970. She later met new friends from Clitheroe Golf Club and became a member there. She met her husband,
