stops. One of the bus stops even
has lights powered by solar
energy. The new service will use
low-floored buses and offer other improvements like bus platforms for bus stops which previously had no footpath, making boarding

in. All stops contain user- friendly colour-coded timetable and fare informa tion.

A NEW building giving 436 square metres of space can be put up a t Jame3 Alpe Motors, Salthill, Clitheroe. The planning application has been granted by offi cials of Ribble Valley Bor ough Council, acting under their delegated powers.

lowed up by requests for every resident to sign a peti tion of opposition. Mr Mike Moss-Blun-
dell, manager of the club was chosen as chairman of
the protesters. He said: "We plan to cre
ate a terrible stink over this. I t is a total waste of tax
payers' money." He said the site at Edis-
ford, where the council want3 to put four tennis
courts and an all-weather- surface sports pitch, was a well-used family area and
always had been. And he said the money
would be wasted because tennis was an elitist sport.

b et ter spent on another football pitch which would be enjoyed by far more peo-
ple.The protesters have been backed by Ribble Valley Borough Councillor John
McGowan. He said: "I am concerned
about light pollution. These floodlights are going to be on late a t night. A lot of people have contacted me saying they are concerned
about these plans. "I am dead against this
proposal. "This is like history
repeating itself. We fought the existing tennis dome in
the early 1990s and lost." Although planning per
mission has yet to be grant ed, the council is hoping to
begin work on the project in
late October. Engineering manager Mr
Graham Jagger said the |
scheme was for four tennis courts and a multi-use hard
surface suitable for such I things as five-a-side foot
ball. "We have every reason to
believe it is a facility that is wanted," said Mr Jagger, who added the proprietors I
of the existing indoor tennis establishment were backing
the proposal. They also had the
promise of some funding | from the Lawn Tennis Asso- c ia t io n .
He added that although | the scheme would mean the

loss of one of the football pitches, n e w arrangements | meant they could accom- modate more matches at weekends.

PLACES like Liverpool, Oldham, Rochdale and Wigan are more affluent than the Ribble Valley - or at least they are according to a survey of the North- West published by one of Britain's four big banks. The Barclays list does not
include the Ribble Valley in the top 22 places lived mby those earning more than £60,000 a year. Cheshire, which has often
vied with the Ribble Valley as a place where the wealthy live, tops the list. Trafford is second and Warrington third.

Even Blackburn with Darwen creeps in the list at
No. 18, with 1.06% of the population earning at least £60,000 a year. But no Rib ble Valley, where, tradition has it, even converted ship- pons are home to some very wealthy people.
