never really been the ^ Swedish manufacturer’s forte. Volvo looks to have rectified this last over sight with the V70 D5

diesel range. Of course, we have seen

Volvo diesels in the past,

. but they have never been state-of-the-art. In fact,

they have never actually been Volvo units, sourced instead from other manu facturers such as Renault. Two factors have forced

the Swedish company to act. With rising fuel prices and a public perception of Volvos being thirsty cars, sales of its V70 estates had

started to slump. The second factor was

the consequent rise in sales

of diesel cars in this sector. An increasing proportion of sales are being won by

diesel cars, due in no small part to the excellence of the best diesel engines around

and, not wishing to be left behind, it embarked on a programme* to punch their weight in the diesel market

Sparkling CV gets ■

job done by Andy EnrightT

TTH construction sites often rescm-

quagmires, it can often pay to have a four-wheel drive commercial vehicle with the clout to turn a mudbath into

a walk in the park. Mitsubishi’s Shogun Commercial Vehicle is easily capable of delivering the goods when the going gets gloopy, and has a range of other attractions beside. Anybody who has worked

outside will know that the British weather can only be

severity) and Isofix mount ings for the optional rear facing child seat to ensure correct fitting every time you install Junior. The D5 diesel puts the

big Volvo estate back on the map. While the V70 has always been an excellent car, its relevance was start ing to be called into ques tion. Here is an estate that reminds us how Volvo came

to become a byword for la r g e lo a d lu g g e r s .

relied on to be utterly unpredictable. Land can go from dustbowl to swamp in minutes with our familiar summer weather, and haul ing a load across a muddy

site by hand is nobody’s idea of productivity. Likewise, for applications

such as forestry support or farming, the Shogun CV comes into its own. Based on the 3.2-litre DI-

D Shogun Classic, the CV boasts a modern direct injection diesel engine which is good for 162 b.h.p. More importantly, there is the small matter of 2751b/ft

Ml

of torque delivered at a sub sonic 2000 r.p.m. This huge torque gives the Shogun enormous lugging power, making it seem impervious

to full or empty loading bays, trailers, mud pools or anything you can throw at it. Just over 11 seconds of

your day will be accounted for by the CV’s acceleration

to 60 m.p.h., while a top speed of 106 m.p.h. is pretty much guaranteed to get the

good there on time. The clincher is an average

fuel consumption figure of 29.1 m.p.g., which is incredi ble given the vehicle’s power, weight and speed. The Shogun CV also ben

efits from improved refine ment, with little of the rear end drumming which usual ly typifies van conversions On the road, the optional

adaptive five-speed auto matic gearbox is one of the

CV’s best features, smooth in its changes and endowed with the ability to learn your driving style and adapt accordingly. The recirculat ing ball steering system is commendably direct too, while tough multi-link sus pension improves the ride. Loading capacity is, as

you would expect, cav ernous. A cargo capacity of 1,651 litres will be enough for most odd-jobs and with a payload capacity of 500kgs, you will be able to put a few bags of sand,

Shogun CV can handle any thing up to 2,800kg, easily encompassing decently- sized caravans, reasonably sized boats and most car

transporters. As with all Mitsubishi

commercial vehicles, the Shogun CV comes with a three-year/100,000 mileage warranty, a six-year anti corrosion perforation w ar rant}’ and three-year pan- European recovery service: Add that to likely strong

sheep or tree stumps in the back of a Shogun CV before

it waves the white flag. The load area measures

1,290mm x 1,090mm x 1,030mm and the lack of intrusion from the wheel arches gives a decent amount of usable fioor

space. If you need to tow, the

resale values and the brand image and the Shogun CV should find a ready market in the UK. If you decide to buy one, why not buck the trend, lake it off road and actually put its Shogun her itage to the lest. You will get a kick out of what it can do. A vehicle that doubles up

for work and play? It makes the £17,995 sticker price look ridiculously tempting.

the market for an Audi A4 or a BMW 3 Series, has MG Rover bitten off more than it can chew? The results are genuinely sur

prising.Turning the car that was once famously described as a “wheeled Werther’s Origi nal” into something that will ring the bells of thrust ing twenty and thirtysome-

quite a piece of work. MG Rover started at a

considerable disadvantage in not having a clean sheet of paper to work from. It has got the Rover 75 as a basis and has to make a

decent fist of it. I t is a bit like being pre
