Run-rate defeat for Clitheroe C

LITHEROE lost out on run rate in the gloom at Padiham on Saturday.

Neil Bolton won the toss and decid

ed to put the hosts into bat, with the game reduced to 41 overs per side. This started to look like a superb decision, when Stephen Gee was out

with only one run on the board. It didn't take long for the second

wicket to fall either, as skipper Andy McNicholas came and went for just

the crease, and managed 10 runs off the first two balls he faced -

quickfire 31. The home side's position was . .

strengthened however, by the half cen tury partnership, put on by PhU Met calfe and David Hall for the fourth

wicket. The pair ran well and chose their ,, .

scoring shots before Hall cut a drive to Andy Bums off Mark Hargreaves and

was out for 27. Hargreaves, returning to the attacK

in place of Neil Bibby, claimed anoth er three victims as only Andy Kelly managed to get into double figures. Padiham declared on 165-9, deny ing Clitheroe the chance to take two

bowling points. n

Clittheroe’s innings started well

the wicket at Whalley Road and had made 25-1 when the heavens opened, making no further play

possible. The one wicket to fall was that

of Michael Whalley (12), howled by David "Onion" O'Neill with the scoreon24.

Skipper Nick Marsh (10 not , „ ,

enough, as they cruised to 63 without loss, as openers Bums and profession al Dexter Fitton attacked the host bowlers with desired effect. However, the balance of play was

about to change dramatically, as Clitheroe then lost their first four wickets for just 17 runs to leave them straggling on 80-4. In the darkening conditions, it

became harder to take on Fazal, who was howling a length that popped and

was difficult to put away. Only Stephen Bishop managed

Wanderers’ great run ends

N-FORM Ribblesdale Wanderers were thwarted by the

before Rain was bowled by Peter Usher for 54. It was a vital partnership

as they scored quickly and at times dominated the

bowlers. Unfortunately things

turned Baxenden’s way as the rest of the Wanderers' batsmen failed to press home the advantage. Gladwin finally fell for 38

and Davies added 25 before Wanderers finished up 178

all out. While being a reasonable

score, Baxenden were only looking at four runs an over to win on run rate. Early strike

Wanderers struck early,

removing Harvey without scoring, caught by David Gardner-Chan off Nawaz. Dave Usher was then

bowled by Nawaz for one. Mark Rishton provided

some relief for the home side as he went after the bowl ing, particularly Barry Spencer, in his 27 before falling to a good catch in the slips by Davies, again off

thepro.

The rain delays didn t help esither side, and at one

, ' itne biuu cum

point it looked like the weather would be the win

ner. But with half-an-hour

left to play, the rain cleared and the players once again took to the field, with Bax enden needing around 30 runs from five overs to win. Nawaz continued his fine form, finishing with 6-26

from 13 overs. Unfortunately, it was the

bowling at the other end that suffered as a result of his tight line and length, with Spencer going for 71 from his 11 overs and Rick Whalley six from one over. The umpires brought the

players off the field immedi ately after 25 overs, which the Baxenden players were more than happy with, as they were seven runs ahead

of the target. Former Lowerhouse pair

Simon Payne (41 not out) and Andrew Chippendale (19 not out) were at the crease as Baxenden closed

on 111-6. The game probably

would not have been fin ished but for the desire of both teams to play a game

of cricket, regardless of the result.
