COUPE AN ASTRA WITH ATTITUDE T

by Andy Enright

O say that the Astra Coupe Touring Car has been successful is an under statement akin to noting that Oliver Reed liked a swift half or that Mike Tyson

can, on occasion, gets a little cross. The Astras have wiped the floor with the

opposition, dominating every round of the 2001 season in an unprecedented display of domi

nance. The Astra Coupe 888

celebrates this achieve ment. Based on the Coupe Turbo, the 888 beefs up the Coupe’s visual appeal with a number of Touring Car-

style cues. Only 100 cars are due

to be built, so a certain degree of exclusivity is guaranteed. But will this be

enough to persuade British buyers to stump up £20,995? The Astra Coupe has

not managed to catch the imagination of the British public in quite the way the old Calibra managed to, and maybe an injection of attitude will do the trick for this most modestly styled of coupes.

On paper, the Astra /

888 seems to have all the bases covered. Big ger wheel arches, low rider side skirts and 17in. OZ alloy wheels fitted with gumball 235/40 series Michelin Pilot Sport tyres give the Astra unprecedent ed visual impact. This is reinforced by

the fact that the car now rides lower on its springs which, along with the dampers, are stiffened for an even more sporting ride. The 888 also features

a unique steering wheel, handbrake lever and centre console, while the aluminium gear knob and drilled pedal set complete the racy effect. Only available in

Europa Blue, the 888 has more feel-good fac tor than the standard car and the same goes for the driving dynam

ics. Unlike the normal

Coupe Turbo, which initially feels much like any other Astra, the 888 promises a far more exciting ride, due to the stiffer suspension and lack of compliance in the sidewalls of the

tyres. The engine really is

the 888’s trump card. With little turbo lag and a healthy dose of available torque, it translates every avail able horsepower into

KING OFF THE ROAD T

r u th be told, i had always dis liked the Land

Rover Discovery. Being butted up behind one in

a traffic queue just caused the uneasy recall

of “Police, Camera Action” videos and they always seemed to be dri ven by blonde Surrey housewives. Therefore when the opportunity came to

drive the latest Discov ery Td5,1 had started sharpening the knives in advance. Two things upset my

■ Express best off-road award, but it had also scooped the best used 4x4 trophy too. Secondly, all my col

preparations. Firstly, the Discovery had not only won the 2001 Auto

ery customers have con tinued to opt for the turbo-diesel version which, thanks to a clever drive-by-wire throttle and a useful 136 b.h.p. output, feels just as responsive. Rest to 60 in 14.2 sec

onds could not be described as rapid, but it will get you where you need to be with a useful 30 m.p.g. bonus at the end of the trip. The introduction of

the E trim level brings the cheapest Td5 Dis covery to £21,995, with prices rising through S, and GS trim levels to £31,995 for the flagship ES variants. The Discovery range

leagues agreed that the latest Td5 was a pretty impressive piece of kit. I was suddenly look

ing distinctly out of step with informed opinion. Perhaps, despite Land

y :

Rover’s claims to the contrary, I was subcon sciously papering over the fact that despite looking superficially similar to the rather troubled car that was first launched in 1989, the Discovery is now radically different; the Td5 especially so. Chief among the

as well, it is better value. The seven-seater TD5

The 2002 model year Td5 features an automatic gearbox retuned for 10% more torque and the interior has been treated to a rather swanky Harman Kardon stereo system and satellite navigation system. genuinely impressive acceleration. With 60 m.p.h. arriv

ing in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 152 m.p.h., Porsche Boxster drivers would be well advised to think twice before trying to outstrip the

Vauxhall. Unfortunately, the

stealth appeal of the Coupe Turbo has been undone by the 888’s lurid body kit. Prepare for every XR3i in the vicinity to suddenly view you as fair game. Vauxhall will have no

trouble shifting all 100 Astra Coupe 888 mod els it produces. Whereas

the Coupe Turbo is a car far more capable than its unprepossess ing looks suggest, the 888 now has the atti tude to match. It will never build up

WRX or Type-R levels of cult appeal, but it is at least an alternative. Vauxhall has shown

that it is beginning to understand perfor

mance cars. While the 888 does

not offer anything par ticularly new, it at least shows that the passion is back within the com pany. Long may it contin

Winning he space ace on he cheap

by Andy Enright A

FEW years a)>(> il was all so simple.

If you had a fami

ly, you either bought a saloon, an estate or, if you were a little more avant-garde, a hatch

back. The Renault Espace

changed the plot, intro ducing the idea of MPV people carriers and since then the traditional cate gories have crumbled somewhat. The Mitsubishi Space Star Classic is a prime example. Smaller than a mini-MPV yet still larger than something like a supcrmini-MPV, the Classic has one thing that brooks no debate. The price. Although the Space

Star has been selling in reasonable numbers since 1998, Mitsubishi had to do something to counter the threats from cheaper models - hence the bargain-priced £8,999 Space Star 1.3 Classic. As you might expect,

the Classic is not exactly loaded to the gills with standard equipment and you will have to do with out such as anti-lock brakes, locking wheel nuts and air conditioning. Your plain black door

handles and side protec tion mouldings, the con

spicuous vacuum where you roof rails should be and your plastic wheel trims will enable more extravagant Space Star owners to pigeonhole you as some sort of skinflint. Having paid just

£8,999 for the Space Star Classic, you probably will not care, however. The 1.3-litre engine is

not remarkable in any way, shape or form. The 42.2 m.p.g. combined fuel figure looks impressive, but will be difficult to

achieve in “real” condi tions, especially if the Space Star is fully loaded. The sprint to (it)

m.p.h. will take over 14 seconds, making the Classic only marginally quicker than some tec tonic plates, but if you expect a racy drive and all that practicality for £8,999 then your expec tations are probably going to have to be man aged in the direction or the pre-owned vehicles selection. Nevertheless, the five-

speed gearbox has a smooth, quality feel to the shift. Sadly (and strangely for a town-ori entated car) there is no automatic option. Around light car parks,

a turning circle of just 4.8 metres is a boon,

while out on the road the slippery 0.33Cd figure means that wind noise is kept to a minimum. Inside, as I have sug
