CURRENT conflict provides a poignant reminder o f the importance the Royal British Legion and its Poppy Appeal plays in the lives of ex-service
personnel. W ith representatives from
Britain’s armed forces currently deployed in the “War Against
Terrorism” , and other recent conflicts in Bosnia, the Gulf, the Falklands and Northern Ireland, the British Legion’s services look set to be of continuing use to younger generations, as well as to th e ir parents and grandparents. Founded on July 1st, 19 2 1, as a result o f the
amalgamation o f fo u r First W o r ld W a r ex-service
organisations, the British Legion this year celebrates its 80th
anniversary. It serves to protect the interests, welfare and memory o f ex-service personnel and their families, and as well as helping members of the ex-service community achieve a better quality of life the Legion also aims to maximise th e ir skills and opportunities. Although last year the Poppy
Appeal raised more than £20m. towards the charity’s work, this only accounted for around half o f the money spent on a community open to anyone who has been in the British Armed Forces fo r a week o r more, and their dependents. Each is eligible to ask the
Legion fo r help, support and advice, and across the country
its staff and volunteers help with various initiatives funded by the appeal. It was on November 11, 1921, that the first donations for
artificial poppies were given. Today the poppy fa c to ry
makes 36 million poppies fo r lapels, wreaths and items. The simple red flower was
originally designed fo r easy assembly by w o rke rs w ith disabilities, a principle which remains tru e today. Each autumn, some 300,000 Poppy Appeal staff and volunteers organise the annual collection and this year the Legion hopes to raise even more money for its work through donations for poppies, legacies, sponsorship, covenants, sales and other fund
raising events. > }
The inspiration behind the Poppy Appeal can be traced back to
John McCrae’s 1915 poem ‘‘In Flanders'Fields”. Moved by his work, which made reference to the poppies that
grew in regions of France where some of the First World Wars bloodiest fighting was experienced, a woman named Moina Michael wrote:‘‘And now the torch and poppy red, wear in honour
of our dead.” An American war secretary with theYMCA, Miss Michael bought
poppies with money given to her by work colleagues and sold them to friends to raise a small amount of cash for servicemen in need. However, it was a French colleague, Madame Guerin, who put
forward the idea of making artificial versions of the flower to sell. In Britain a young infantry officer named Major George Howson
formed a society to help those disabled in the First World War. He suggested to the Legion that members of this society could make poppies, a move which led to the founding of the poppy factory in
1922. For the first time in a decade, this year's Remembrance Sunday
coincides with Armistice Day.
