WINTER is upon us all of a sudden, so it is likely we will be eat ing more hearty dish es - casseroles, stews and pies. That is the perfect

excuse for drinking wines from the South ern Rhone, and after a succession of out standing vintages there are an awful lot of good wines to be tried. According to a cer

tain American wine critic, "the Superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who pro duces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wines". Rasteau, north of

Avignon, is one of the 17 villages in the C o te s -du -R hon e appellation and, to anybody who has travelled that region, it is more famous for its sweet, port-like wines. D 0 M A I N E

SOUMADE 1999 C O T E S - D U -

RHONE at £5.89, is made from specially selected grapes from the villages. The RASTEAU

VILLAGES at £7.59 is made from the cias sic grapes of the region - grenache syrah and mourvedre. The wines are full-

bodied, rich and spicy with a small amount of vanilla from the short barrique ageing, all very naturally pro duced with no filtra tion to retain more flavour. There are another

two cuvees o Rasteau which we keep - very select wines and very rare for this part of the world, a cabernet sau- givnon.
