Wizard toi a hit this

By NOREEN BARR I V vK

T IS going to be a wizard Christmas this year as children fall under the spell o f Harry Potter toys. The much-anticipated film, based on 1 irs o f JK Rowling’s best-selling books, is about to be unleashed and toy

experts predict kids will go wild about Harry products in the run-up o December 25th.

The toy tipped to top

them all is the Harry Pot ter Lego range, which will allow youngsters to build the mysterious Hogwarts Castle or the Hogwarts Express Train, as well as Harry’ s classroom, the forbidden corridor and other parts o f the budding wizard’s world. For children these prod

ucts will be magical. But parents might have cause to curse and triple hex Harry Potter before Christmas finally arrives. Experts believe the Lego

sets will fly off the shelves, leaving parents scrambling to find the present their child so desperately wants. Festive seasons past have

brought parents the Furby

furore and the Buzz Lightyear battle, which reduced some mums and dads to queuing overnight to buy the must-have toy. Last year some parents

also struggled to lay their hands on Thunderbirds’

Tracy Island, which was a surprise best-seller. Marcello Rossi, a council

member of the British Asso ciation ofToy Retailers and the operator o f three Toy- master stores, says Harry Potter Lego will appeal to children under 10, who are loo young to read the books and tend to be fanatical about the building blocks. But he warns: “ At the

moment, parents are not having to queue for Harry

Potter Lego and 1 would hope that they don’ t later on, but it is inevitable that some will end up doing that. 1 think it will be an issue in December.” Aside from all things

Potter, those in the know are predicting some other

intriguing hits this year. Marcello Rossi says that

many children are likely to ask for the Candy Floss Machine, which allows them to make candy floss within 30 seconds just by putting in some sugar and

pushing a button. Jon Salisbury, publisher

o f the industry magazine ToyNews and founder o f the UK Toy and Game Council, thinks this product

will be a winner. , , .

“Last year in America it sold millions when it came

out," he said. “ It’s such a simple piece

o f machinery, and where have you ever been able to get candy floss belorc, except at the fun fair ? The bad news, however,

is that General Creation, the company which imports the Candy Floss Machine, is already anticipating supply

problems. It is reported to have

bought around 260,000 ol the Chinese-made

machines, but orders have topped 350,000, which could give parents a

headache. Another widely-tipped

top toy this Christmas is the

pogo stick, which came bouncing back into lashion after its appearance on the TV show Big Brother. Thunderbirds toys are go

this year amid a resurgence of popularity first displayed in the 1960s, while the elec tronic SPV vehicle o f old favourite Captain Scarlet

could soon be in short sup ply.

But Jon Salisbury pre

dicts one product will out sell all these top toy con tenders, including Harry Potter Lego - the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. He admits some in the

industry class the new Game Boy as an electronic consumer product, but argues that parents and chil dren see it as a toy. “ It’s going to represent a huge chunk o f consumer

______ — T money this Christmas, he

warns. What’ s more, not only

children will be asking lor the new hand-held console - plenty of grown-ups will have it on their wish list too

Your guide to the toys that will be hot this Christmas

Nintendo Game Boy Christmas

Advance: The hand-held console came on to the market this summer and immediately broke UK sales records, with 81,000 snapped up in the first weekend alone. Retailing for around £85, the young and young-at-heart are

going to want one. Harry Potter Lego: The

range includes Hogwarts Castle, which costs £79.99, and the Hogwarts Express Train for £39.99. Captain Scarlet: Cap

tain Scarlet is battling the evil Mysterons once more on BBC2, and a range of toys based around the char acter are tipped to sell well. Look out for his Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, which

costs £9.99. Thunderbirds: The

International Rescue heroes triumphed in 2000 and should also sell Well this year. Kids will ask for the new Thunderbirds 2 Play- set, which includes an opening cockpit to insert Virgil and Gordon micro figures. Made by Vivid Imaginations, it costs

£29.99. Nutcracker Barbie:

The ever-popular Barbie doll has become a prima ballerina who dances in the Nutcracker. A special dance stand allows her to perform her dainty moves. Made by Mattel, she costs £19.99. Miracle Baby: This doll, also from Mattel, has

the emotions and reflexes of a real-life six-month-old baby, thanks to smart chip technology. She gurgles, smiles, frowns and yawns, demands to be fed, plays peek-a-boo and costs around £44.99. Candy Floss Machine:

Kids can make candy floss from white granulated

sugar in 30 seconds. This toy from General Creation costs around £29.99. Pogo Sticks: Kids first

played with wooden pogo sticks 70 years ago, and steel versions of this tradi tional toy are back in vogue. Many manufactur ers are making them, but the JaJambo pogo stick by Halsall costs £19.99. Quiz games: There has

been heated rivalry between the TV quiz shows The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? — and there will be a Christ mas showdown between their quiz games too. The Weakest Link electronic option costs around £34.99, while the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? board game

costs about £26.99. H ar ry’ s Levitating

Challenge: There is more to Harry Potter products than Lego and this game by Mattel is likely to sell mag ically well. A ball is levitat ed by an air system and children have to guide it through obstacles in a maze. The game costs

£39.99.

d e r ia n HOUSE

M

ost parents will tell you that it is not knowing what to

expect that gives rise to most trepidation on their First visit

to Derian House. But within hours or their

arrival at Derian House, till will know that everything possible is being done to help

their child. Care and support is

offered with vision and expe rience, warmth and sensitivi ty - and in an atmosphere aimed at putting both chil dren and parents totally at

ease. In spite of - or some

would say because of - its role as a children’s hospice, it is a place where life is for liv ing, where laughter and tears are found in equal measure. Visitors often find them

selves unexpectedly surprised and moved by the strength ol purpose and determination

shown by children who, in

many cases, know they have only a limited amount of time left with their families, yet still pack as much fun and laughter as possible into |

every single day. Obviously the very high ,

standards of care provided by the staff at Derian House have a rising cost implica tion. However, there is no charge laid down for the care | provided at Derian House and the doors of the hospice are open for referral to any family in the North-West I with a child who is terminal ly ill or with a life threatening

condition. Derian House has little

statutory funding from health | authorities. The hospice is open 365 days a year, but receives statutory funding for | just nine. It is faced with the i daunting prospect of raising in excess of £1 million m , voluntary contributions this

year alone. 1 —" r -v - - '■
