l t h o u g h in the past, Mazda’s 323 has been one of the
more avant garde family hatchbacks, the current five-door model has taken a more conservative approach. Perhaps delib erately so, to distance this mainstream model from hi-tech designs. The importers want this
car to be the one that more sensible families consider, a theme continued by the lat est special edition Atlantis version, introduced to high light the availability of an entry-level 1.3-litre engine at the foot of the range. The idea is to create a car
that looks almost identical to plusher versions and sell it at a price which under cuts the most basic models. Hence a price tag of £9,995, some £500 less than the base 1.3LXi variant on
which this car is based. Despite this, you get Ice Blue metallic paint, a body- coloured rear spoiler, green tinted glass, body-coloured bumpers, mirrors and door handles and the usual badg-
ing. And that is in addition to
all the usual bits and pieces fitted to most current fami ly hatchbacks. That means split-folding rear seats, elec
tric front windows, an RDS stereo, manual driver’s seat height adjustment, central locking (although without a remote on the key fob), an alarm/immobiliser, power steering, deadlocks and an adjustable steering wheel.

r i t i s h people like their Ford Fiestas.
They have, after all, made this the UK’s best selling small car for the last 15 years and the nation’s over all top seller for the last three. But times may be changing. Rover, Fiat, VW, SEAT and Toyota all have new supermini models which seriously threaten Ford’s market leader. To sur vive in future, the Fiesta cannot rely on its past. Hence the need for the latest heavily revised ver
sion, with its fresh look, sportier feel and more com petitive specification. To be
fair, very little change was needed, at least in terms of driving dynamics. In its pre vious form, the Fiesta was the best handling supermini you could buy: it still is.
A series of minor chassis
modifications has preserved the advantage and the addi tion of a new, faster 1.6-litre Zetec-S flagship variant has at last provided enough power to emphasise the chassis excellence. Other engines across the
latest three and five-door line-up are largely
unchanged in petrol form - or at least the two main stream units are, namely, the enduring Endura-E 1.3- litre petrol unit and the more modem 16-valve 1.25
engine. Where it was previously
used, the 1.4-litre 16v unit has now been replaced by

estate version, Toyota hopes that the D4-D engined Corolla GS will compare favourably with more expensive rivals

to £10,995 price span that is broadly similar to the old model, Ford has worked hard to improve specifica tions.
ith the rehabilitation of the diesel engine's image, Toy ota have opted to fit the impressive D4-D common rail
diesel unit into the facelifted eighth generation of the Corolla. The version fitted to the Corolla is not exactly the same as
that found under the bonnet of its bigger brother, the Aven- sis. Despite boasting the same 1.9-litre capacity (although Toyota usually refers to it as a 2.0-litre), the Corolla version does without the intercooler fitted to the Avensis and as such develops 89 b.h.p. as opposed to the 109 b.h.p. from the
