Naturalists' whistlestop tour from Islay to Iceland

THE results of 29 years of study and patient photography of bird life formed the 26th lecture given to Clitheroe Nat uralists by Mr Gordon

Yates. His title "A celebration

of birds" described in pic tu res journeys made to many locations a t home, in Scotland and in Ice lan d , with sp e c ta cu la r rare sightings and scenery. But Mr Yates told the

slides of the landscape, waterfalls, bubbling volca

noes, mud pools and "geysirs." These were excit ing locations and Mr Yates travelled to the remotest areas of the North West fjords, seeing rare flowers and obtaining special per mission to photograph the unique habitats of birds. Nine million pairs of puffins thrive in the climate. A distant lake gave Mr

audience th a t his most memorable experience was at Stockport, where 300-500 waxwings raided the berries

for a period of five weeks. The speaker explained

that lapwigs, once common on our fields, have now found new habitats on fac

tory roofs. The journey took in Bass

Rock, where now 40,000 gannets jostle for position and circle round like

snowflakes. The Cairngorms, Skye

and Islay were other venues covered by Mr Yates, but Iceland has held a fascina tion for him, and there were

Yates one of. his greatest experiences, the sight of himbrini, the great north

ern diver. In complete contrast he

returned to Lancashire with a slides of hundreds of waxwings drinking water from pools at Halford's car park in Rochdale. After a lively question

time, chairman Mr Brian Jones thanked the speaker fior his whistlestop tour. The next lecture at the

library will be on Thursday, November 16th, at 7-30 p. m. when Dr Irene Ridge has chosed for her subject "Woodland Ecology." Cynthia M. Lang

Red squirrel print proves a hit at club’s winteir competition

THE Ribblesdale Camera Club’s second winter series com p eti tio n was held last week with a good entry of 32 prints and 44

slides. More encouraging still

was the high standard throughout, with hardly a picture that might not have won some previous compe

tition. The judge was David

Earl from the HASSRA (Fylde) Camera Club, who explained that he was also a keen member of the Fylde Mountaineering Club, but that all the local peaks were currently under water. The winner of the print

section was Mick Caddy with a quite superb print of

Based on spending in

Plans under discussion

FURTHER talks will take place to try to resolve problems surrounding plans for an extension in Ribchester. Members of Ribble Val

ley Borough Council’s Plan ning and Development Committee had been rec ommended to turn down a resubmitted application for Dewhurst House Farm in Blackburn Road. However, councillors heard th a t the applicant

standard of print mounting and presentation. The previous evening saw

an inter-club slide competi tion held at Blackburn Pho tographic Society. Ribbles- dale's results were rather disappointing, with ninth place out of 12 clubs. The two most successful slides were Steuart Kellington’s 17 out of 20 for "Tai Girl" and "Montalban", by Ken Geddes, which scored 15. Next week Mr Dave

Crabtree from Bury shows two and a quar ter inch square slides, and talks about "My View of the

Landscape." The meeting will be as

usual at 7-30 p. m. on Tues day in the clubroom, Ribble Lane, Chatburn.

Festive plea

LET there be light is the plea from members of Clitheroe Town Council's Decorative Clitheroe Com

mittee. It has sent out letters to

the town's business commu nity, asking for donations towards the cost of Clitheroe's festive lights, which are to be strung throughout the town centre to "encourage the spirit of

Christmas". Businesses able to help

are asked to forward their contributions in cheques

made payable to the Deco rative Clitheroe Commit tee, 5 Parson Lane Clitheroe BB7 2JP.
