THE rich goalscoring vein Clitheroe have

been in came to an end on Saturday. And the Blues will be hugely disappointed not

to have proved they can beat the top sides as Skelmersdale maintained fourth place with the

three points. After firing 17 goals in three games, Steve Parry's men could find no way through the

from goalkeeper Jon Parrott’s 12th-minute error

Mersey si ders' rearguard. And the Shawbridge side never recovered

which handed the visitors the lead. Parrott looked to have held a header from Gary McBride, but the ball fell from his grasp

as he lost his footing. Clitheroe might have been ahead at that stage

after Craig Dewhurst shot wide after he and

Mark Stewart broke clear. Brian Welch also hit thebar after spinning off

Gardner up front, and he was soon involved. The former Chorley man ran through the Darwen defence, rode two tackles and fired the

Blues ahead. Just before the final whistle, Clitheroe suf

for a mis-timed tackle. But moments later, Welch added a crucial

third goal to put Clitheroe in the driving seat. Monday's second leg kicks-off at 7-30 p.m.

Under 15s face a crunch clash against Junior Clarets on Sunday at Waddington. After being held 1-1 by

Rcadstonc United, the Wolves dropped crucial points. They now lead the Clarets by two points, with two games to play - although the Burnley side liave a game in hand. Wolves went ahead

against Rcadstone with a fortunate goal from a cor ner, but were under pres sure for the rest of the game. Rcadstone equalised when a corner was not cleared properly, and could have won but for some excellent saves from inan- of-thc-match Stewart. The Wolves Under 8s

reached the North Valley League Cup Final with a 5-3 win over Fullcdgc Colts. Star man James Tootle pul the locals ahead at the break, and Ben Frankland (2) and Matthew Winckley put Wolves well in command. Fulledge got one back before Tootle added the

fifth. Fullcdgc added two late goals as they refused , to give up, but Clithcroe held on comfortably.

Bucup Borough Reserves.............................0 Clilheroe Reserves..........................................3 AFTER two successive defeats, Clitheroe Reseives returned to winning at Bacup to move into the North Western Trains Reserve Division League Cup knockout stages. On a bumpy pitch, it was hard to play a pass ing game with route one football being the order

of the day. Jon Riley opened the scoring just before half

time when he slotted home a cross by the impressive Roger Haythornthwaite. The second came early in the second half

when a Bacup defender handled in the box. Steven Wilkinson stepped up to score from

the spot. Mark Isherwood added a third with 15 min

utes to go. Clitheroe dominated the game with keeper

Jim Ormond a virtual spectator. Youth players Matt Garner, Wilkinson, Tom

Benfield, Leon O'Neil and Haythornthwaite all had impressive games, as did newcomer Jonny Spence after coming on as a substitute. With only six games to play, and runners-up

slot still a possibility in the league, the club are trying to give the young players experience at a

higher level with next season in mind. On Saturday, the reserves are at home to

get back in the game, but the Skelmersdale keeper turned his shot round the post. © Striker Jonny Spence has joined Clitheroe
