A MAN from the Ribble Valley is bound for the Loire Valley to discuss a "de-vine" proposition. Mr Eric Ronnan, former
chairman of Whalley Twinning Association, is to journey to the village’s French twin, Vihiers, where lie is to meet this weekend with victuallers Messieurs Cesbron and Lefort, two of the region's leading wine producers. He is hoping to glean
really had to shout about St.
advice from the two experts about the effects of global warming on grape growing, after vines presented by the Vihiers visiting party in 1989 have miraculously taken root at an undisclosed location on the south face of
the Whalley Nab. Said Mr Ronnan: "These
vines seem to have found our native soil very much to their liking and we think they might even bear fruit before long. It seems bizarre, but having talked to Messieurs Cesbron and Lefort over the telephone, they seem to think global warming could have altered the climate sufficiently to allow grapes to grow here. "We do not wish to reveal
where these vines are on the Nab yet, because we do not want to have them van dalised or plundered. But if these talks with our French colleagues prove fruitful, then wo are hoping to make a rather exciting announce ment next week."

drawers, Outers, rovers, creelers, loomers, sweepers and tapers were common job descriptions of the day. In her letter, Dr Condon describes
her link'with the founders of the mill. She writes: "I am the granddaughter of Tom Garnett of Waddow Hall and youngest daughter of his eldest child, Violet Addison Garnett, who was married at St Helen's Church, Waddington, in January, 1902. A long description of her wedding was pub lished in the Clitheroe Advertiser. "My sister, Hilaire, who died several
years before I was horn, is buried in the churchyard of St Helen's. A stained glass window in the church is dedicated to her and the figure of St Hilaire is taken from a portrait of
her." Dr Condon, who stayed in a cot
tage at Waddow Hall as a four-year- old, also treasures a poem written by James Garnett expressing his love for the Clitheroe. area. He wrote: The noble hills, thy lovely glade, Old castle, woods and leafy shade, Are joys to me that never fade. E'en when all other pleasures fail. He goes on to say,"My heart and soul are at Low Moor".
