TV is inspiring some big changes on the home front

by Natalie Cox

EVERYONE wants an ideal home. After the hustle and bustle of being a t work, we all want to go home and relax in

the idyllic surroundings th a t we have created And improving your

home can be fun - if the people on "Changing Rooms", "Better Homes" and "Home Front" can do it, so can we! Millions of people in

households across the coun try have become addicts of this type of television pro gramme, picking up handy hints and top tips.

And I have to confess

th a t I have joined the legions of home improve ment programme fans. Inspired by "Changing Rooms", myself and my husband, Chris, have tried sponging, wood washing, varnishing and even had a go at wallpapering. And we are not alone. Every week home owners

from Burnley to Bournemouth, Pendle to Penzance and Clitheroe to Cardiff are trying to repro duce the looks th a t have been tried and tested on the television. These days it is not just

the inside of homes that are being spruced up. With Alan Titchmarsh, Charlie Dimmock and Tommy

Walsh in charge of the "Ground Force", gardens are getting a new look too. But when i t comes to

perfecting your pad, fur nishing your flat, tarting up your terrace or decorat ing your detached, where do you start? One of the latest ideas is

to make up a storyboard by getting a white background and bringing together fab ric swatches, paint samples, carpet pieces and even the wood finishes th a t you fancy in your new room. The idea is to build up a picture of how it will all look together without going to great expense and creating a room that clash es and having to s ta r t

again. With DIY stores offering

p aint te s te r pots, many fabric shops being happy to give you a swatch of your chosen design and carpet samples being available, it is not too difficult to recre ate the look you want on a small scale and for a low budget. But how do you know

what colour of paint or car pet to choose? And that's before you have even start ed on the furniture, light fittings, curtains, cushions, duvets, kitchen units and bathroom suite, not to mention the accessories. Over the years tas te s

have changed. Wallpaper which was torn down to make way for paint tech niques is making a come back. P a in t in Mediter ranean shades and bright colours are all the rage, but experts have used pastel shades and calm colours to create a cool, relaxed look. When it comes to floors, it seems to be a case of follow ing your instinct as carpets, rugs and wood floors all appear to be "in". Lights can be on walls or

from ceilings, furniture can be traditional or modern and kitchen units can be made in almost anything, while bathrooms have gone from the psychedelic colours of the '60s to the more metallic shades of the

ed you want some work car rying out, there is one big worry: how do you know you can trust someone to do a proper job? You may well be worried

about being taken for a ride by “cowboys” who promise a firs t-rate job and then leave us to pick up the tab when things go wrong. However, there is no need

for anyone to have such wor ries. There are many trade

and technical associations which maintain standards, keep everyone on their toes and are able to give valuable advice on the work in hand. In the home improvement

then there is an association which can put you in touch with the right person. If you are thinking of

field, there are associations and federations covering most aspects of this vast industry. And the profes sional institutions are also a reliable source of informa tion. Most are members of the National Home Improvements Council. For instance, if you want

improving your heating sys tem, what you gain on the greater efficiency swings you will not want to lose on the sub-standard insulation roundabout. So you will want to know if your home is up to par, and there are specialist organisations who have members with just the right expertise. Electrical work, in partic

to install full central heating — or even just have a new boiler fitted — and do not know a reliable local heating engineer to do the work,
