MEP calls for Euro ombudsman on standards in public life
THE MEP for Lancashire Central, Mark Hendrick, has called for an ombudsman for standards in public life as the European Parliament sets about restoring public confidence in
the European Commission. The proposal by Mr Hendrick and his
colleagues has been tabled as an oral question to the commission, rthe council and th e European Parliaiiifent. The ombudsman would have the power;to
investigate all three institutions. Mr Hendrick said: "We must act imme
diately to make sure that the public have confidence in the European Union to erad icate fraud and mismanagement at every level. An independent watchdog would provide the means to combat fraud. "It is vital, at such an important time
for the European Union, that we have an independent body which can investigate all three institutions, act swiftly and have the power of sanction."

I t seems tha t the infor

Increasingly inexpensive communication and more readily accessible informa tion will enable computer systems to join together to form a globally intercon nected network, the Infor mation Superhighway. About 40% of this growth is due to new In ternet users accessing the Web from home and an o th e r 15% is due to increased usage among existing users. The remaining growth is attributable to increased use at work and more non- USA-based traffic. But it was sites that sell products and services th a t experi-
