Sixty years ago, thousands of young German and Austrian boys of Jewish descent fled Nazi perse cution under the auspicis of the Christian Council for Refugees from Ger many and Central Europe.
Of those, 70 wide-eyed and apprehensive boys came to Riversmead School (now Rowland County High School). Each had 10 shillings in his pocket and a stick of salami. Naturally local curiosity was roused. "Riversmead has been materially attuned as a home and training school for refugee boys from central Europe," reported the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times of July 28th,
An official ceremony, held to welcome the boys, was organised by the Christ ian Refugee Council, the Social Welfare Depart ment of the Methodist Church and the National Children's Home and Orphanage organisation.

"We were all from Christian families, but had Jewish blood in us, so we had to escape," said Dr Nick Boheimer (73), who came from Cologne and who now is a practising doctor in South London and has five children. He said they were all fright ened for their futures when they arrived and were not sure whether or not they would ever see their parents again. Many of them, tragical ly, did not.

The Advertiser and Times correspondent was part of the party shown around the school and he reported: "... they were grand lads, courteous, well mannered and apparently happy in the beauty and serenity of their new surroundings."
The Rev. W. Simpson, speaking at the ceremo ny, commented: "It was through experience and training at Riversmead they regarded the boys as potential peacemakers for the coming genera tion that the main responsibility for recon struction was to begin."
Mr Alex Buxbaum (74) rec ollected: "Hundreds of us came across on the boat from the Hook of Hol land. We all came to London and we had labels on us saying who we were. Myself and two other lads were sent to Riversmead and we were the last three to arrive. It was a very traumatic time for many of us. Some of the boys were: IS young as 11 and didn't know what was going to happen." But Mr Buxbaum, one of several who settled here for some time after the war, fell in love with the Ribble Val ley and its friendly peo ple. He now lives in West Bradford with his wife, Doris, to whom he has been married for 55 years."When I came here I went to Blackburn with my mates and we looked at all the smoke from the chimneys and I said there was no way I was going to live here, but I was the one who ended up staying!"
