Lively crowd of all ages enjoy sports

A LIVELY crowd of youngsters and mums and dads gathered on the Coulthurst Jubilee Field on Saturday tor the annual sports day organised by Rimington and Middop sports committee. The competition was fast

ton Recreation Committee, Mr Derek Knowles, pre sented the trophies to the boys and girls with most points.

Not quite in the top 30!

CLITHEROE has failed to make it into the top 30 North West locations for house prices, according to the latest statistics by Experian, the global infor mation solutions company. It is placed 39th out of

more than 200 other towns in the region, and 12 places behind neighbouring Lon-

gridge. The figures are based on

average house prices for

1998 and the percentage growth in prices between

1995 and 1998. Clitheroe's average house

price last year was £69,893 (8.47% growth since 1995), compared with £122,282 (23.84%) in Alderley Edge - the highest for the North West - and £72,655 (8.84%) in Longridge. The region's correspond

ing figures were £59,370.33 (14.24%).

Solo whist winners SOLO whist winners at Pendle Club this week were Mr J.

Mercer, Mrs M. Holding and Mrs A. Foster. New players are welcome on Mondays at 7-30 p.m.

SAFETY MESSAGE FROM YOUNGSTERS X

ARTISTIC pupils from Clitheroe's St James's CE Primary School joined in our recent "Be Safe, Stay Safe cam paign to highlight the need for young sters and their parents to put safety

first.

A supplement included in last week's Clitheroe Advertiser and

Awards for students

TWO Ribble Valley stu dents are to receive scholar ship awards from Accring ton and Rossendale Col-

lege. Kevin Martin, who is . ,

from Clitheroe, has been nominated for his greatest contribution to his course. Sanay Suksatien, who is studying information tech nology, will receive his nomination for overcoming obstacles and showing the

greatest effort. The prizes will be pre

sented on Thursday by Emily Thrane, North West Regional Director of the Further Education Fund ing Council, at the Saturn Suite, at the Globe Centre, The candidates are

among 30 who are study' ing, or who previously stud ied, at Accrington and Rossendale College. The prizewinners are selected for various reasons and will receive scholarships for

varying amounts. , . j ■ 1 ^

Times featured the drawings of youngsters from several Ribble Valley primary schools, which we used as part of Child Safety Week, to empha sise the need for families to take active steps to prevent accidents from occur

ring. Unfortunately, the photograph

nooomDanying the "Be Safe, St

accompanying tne -De aaie. Stay Safe" art work of St James's pupils was not that of the youngsters who

had taken part. Above is the correct picture of the

young artists from St Jamess CE Pri mary School who kindly contributed to our campaign. (280599/17/3)

Sunshine greets local ramblers

SUNSHINE and a light breeze greeted members of Clitheroe Ramblers’ Club, when they strode west to east along Whinfell Ridge. Apart from a solitary

buzzard wheeling overhead, they had the ridge almost to themselves, as the hills between the Howgills and the Lake District attract fewer visitors than their neighbours. While none of the ridge's

five summits are moun tains, the clear day allowed for fine views stretching to the Kent Estuary. After lunching in the lee

of the trig point on Grayrigg Common, the group, led by Ms Gillian Morpeth, made its way down into Borrowdale. Fol lowing Borrow Beck down the isolated valley, the party paused for further refreshments beside the stream before ending the

day's walk.

Referee/umpire entertains Probus members

SPORTING personality Mr Ivan Smith addressed members of the Clitheroe

Probus Club. Chairman Mr Jim Park

er paid tribute to last year s chairman, Mr Peter Tran ter, who died earlier in the week. Members stood in silent respect tor a much loved and respected col

league. The speaker, from

Accrington, was a football league referee, Lancashire League umpire and chair man of the bench of Accrington magistrates. He drew on his wide experience to inform and entertain. In a lively talk, Mr

Smith outlined his very positive outlook regarding discipline, both on the sporting fields and in the

general community. His serious message was seasoned with humour and

anecdotes, although it was clear that, regardless of the venue or situation, he was always fully in charge of

proceedings. In a resume of his activi

ties which had taken him from Accrington to the fur thest parts of the globe, he returned again and again to his home base in Lan cashire, where his involve ment with football at all levels had provided him with a springboard for a lifetime of interest, excite ment and an entry to events and places which could only be imagined by most of his audience. Thanking him for a most

interesting and stimulating talk, Mr Jim Pilkington described the speaker as an ambassador for Accrington and an extraordinary char acter with a common touch.

Work given the go-ahead

A RESERVED matters application for a detached bun galow and double garage at land adjacent to a Bilhngton

farm has been approved. •, Members of Ribble Valley Borough Council Planning

and Development Committee gave permission for the work at Whittams Farm, Neddy Lane.

__________ The club re-groups this

Saturday for its annual long distance walk, which will be an 18-mile trek starting at Wray and visiting Low and High Bentham, and Lowgill. Back-up support will be provided for the transport of food, drink, clothing and to meet walk ers at various points. The aim of the walk is to

encourage those who may not have previously tackled such distances to don their boots and give it a try, with organisers promising to set the event's pace to that of the slowest. Further details can be obtained by tele phoning Mr Barker on 01254 823290. Alternative ly, join the walk by turning up at North Street car park, Clitheroe, at 8-30 a.m. or at the Meal Bank Bridge, Wray, an hour later.
