A REUNION with a difference is planned to celebrate the golden jubilee of Bowland County High School, Grindleton. R a th e r than the
^ social venue event often ; chosen for such o c ca - 'sions, the school will be ' "open for memories" to
- offer on-the-spot nos- . vtalgia. ^ . T h is will be from 11 ' a. m. to 4 p. m. on Satur-
" day, September 4th, and • all former pupils, staff and others associated in
' any way with half a cen- . tu ry o f ed u ca t ion a l p rog re s s are welcome. There will be a bar and
--refreshments. •' One part of the area will not be open, however. The claimed sulphur spring in nearby fields which once
■-•offered healing waters is ' sealed off for ever!
!•; "We are expecting quite a gathering as Bowland

is held in such great affec tion," says present head Mr Steve Colling. He him self has been awarded the CBE for services to educa
tion. The school was originally
called Riversmead, and had an interesting history. But over recent decades
it has has carved its own special niche in local sec ondary education, and takes pupils from a wide area. The remarkably rural location provides many opportunities for fieldwork, but Bowland is proud of its academic strengths too. Demand for places is
very hard to fully meet, and there is a new building pro gramme to help cope with increasing numbers. But careful planning will enable the first-year starting in September to be nearly half
as big again as normal. The front part of the
complex has a similar appearance to the original, although there has been much modernisation. New buildings at the back of the school keep it right up to
date. The basic house was built
as a hydro about a century ago and in 1922 was taken over by the National Chil dren's Home. That lasted 15 years, and after two years of emptiness the Government took the property over. For years afterwards it was home and school to boys from Jewish families in Aus tria and Eastern Europe who had fled from the
Nazis. After that, propwty mar
ket factors came into play. According to the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times of August 15th, 1949, asyndi-

committee was told. The school was taken
over by Lancashire County Council under local govern ment re-organisation in
1974. Memories from then, and times before and since, will be very welcome at the
re-union. A telephone call is all
that is needed, to Mrs Bar bara Thwaite at the school, 01200 441374, or to gover nor Mrs Jean Murray, 01729 840264.
A FLASHBACK lo (he early days of Bowland County High School, then called Riversmead. There have been some changes to the detail of the buildings - and a wealtli of change lo the pupils' clothing!
