TWICE COOKED BEEFWITH FRENCH MUSTARD with Roger Jowett, ofthe Punch Bowl, Hurst Green.

BEDECKED with hanging baskets and window boxes, the Punch Bowl, at Hurst Green, is a true old English country pub, with a restaurant which has a reputation for fine food. Our Dish of the Week recipe

comes from the chef at the Punch Bowl, Roger Jowett, who has been

at the inn for the past five years, both as patron and preparing food, together with a spell as assistant chef in the days of the Dutton Grills. He is helped in the kitchen by his wife, Pru, who makes most of the sweets, and fellow chef

Elaine Bloore. Choices of food can be made from

the a la carte menu, pub meals, lunch-time menu and specials of the day. The growing number of clientele are able to enjoy the popular half price menu on Mondays, which is

particularly busy as many establish ments close their kitchens on the first working day of the week. The menu does not loose its quality, however, as there is a choice of nine starters and nine main courses as well as sweets. The ch o ice often includes such delights as cream of leek and cauli flower soup, a trio of shellfish terrine or rainbow trout pate among others, and to follow, roast belly pork topped with mustard and brown sugar served with gravy or char grilled rib eye steak served with sauce royale. The Sunday special menu changes

each week and offers at least one roast, often two, with a selection of other dishes. The restaurant and pub is open for food all day - perfect to call in on your way homo after a day

AS part of a national German wine campaign, we recently received two awards, a highly commended for the best Ger man Riesling list and another for the most diverse German

wine list. As a great lover of German Ries

ling, I was very pleased to receive

these two awards. One of the greatest German wine

producers I have met was Dr Loosen, of Bernkastel, in the mid dle Mosel, the subject of many international wine articles and of Jancis Robinson's BBC TV wine

course.

With wine writer Andrew Byrne, of Byrne's Wine Merchants, Kiny Street,

Clitheroe (01200 423152) We have just taken delivery of

the new 1998 Dr L. Riesling, at £5.79 a bottle, the wine from pre mium quality vineyards on the steep slopes of the River Mosel, blended to be a typical wine of the region. It offers outstanding value, just off dry with a wonderful har mony of soft, peachy fruit flavours and acidity, making the perfect

aperitif. It is also tine with oily fish and salty or strong blue cheese, but I think the best way to drink it is well chilled, on a warm summer

evening. "Riesling is the greatest white

wine grape in the world". . . Jancis Robinson. It you think you know German wine - drink again.

SUNDAY 27th JUNE feat II ring

THIS book has been half a cen tury in the making and will dominate bookshelves for con

siderably longer. When you consider that the

author is "Dalesman extraordi naire" Bill Mitchell, then obvi ously it has to be something

rather special. For 50 years, former Dalesman

editor Mr Mitchell has recorded the changes, talking to the charac ters and capturing the images on

' film. A prolific writer, having trained .

as a journalist at the Craven Her ald in Skipton, his books are avidly read by all those with a soft spot for the Yorkshire Dales.

: This century has been witness to immense changes. The landscape, once dominated by small farms.

The Story of the Yorkshire Dales,

Phillimore, £17.99. W. R. Mitchell,

stone-built barns, meadows and copses amid the jigsaw of dry-stone walls, has seen a slow march towards uniformity. Hill farming is now seriously threatened by eco nomics and the native population is gradually being dominated by "off-comers" and thousands of visi

tors. The author has spoken to geog

raphers and archaeologists who have explained the natural forces which have been at work over mil lions of years and assembled details of human activity over 12,000!

The result is a weighty and

important, yet readable work, with an index which will intrigue anyone who has ancestors in the Yorkshire Dales. Colour illustrations, maps and black and white photographs are interspersed between chapters chronicling the history of one of tlie country's most scenic and pop ular rural areas. On sale at Kaydee and all good

bookshops, this book is bound to be another W. R. Mitchell success !
