PICK OF THE WEEK "Samuel Pepys-The Secret
Diaries”. Charier Tiicatre, Preston. Monday to March 27th.
This exciting new production por
trays the youthful and vivacious Samuel Pepys' passion for life during the heady and dangerous days of the Restoration period. The play then moves beyond the diary to show a mature Pepys looking towards the future. Pepys (Nick Wilton) is propelled
through London's political and social scene by working for his influential cousin, my Lord Montagu (Brian Deacon). A valiant and remarkable survivor, we follow Pepys as he weaves his precarious career from Clerk to Acts, to Secretary for Naval Affairs and most valued advisor to the King. Central to his life and at the heart
of the play is the tempestuous rela tionship of Pepys and his young wife Elizabeth (Sophie Walker). The ever- changing scenes of life through which Pepys guides us are accompanied by music and dance of the period - Pur cell, Monteverdi and Lawes - which highlights the pageantry and opulence of the Restoration.
