Row with boyfriend leads to driving ban

A WHALLEY woman crashed her car into a lamp-post as she travelled

to sort out a row with her boyfriend. Blackburn magistrates heard that when

she was breathalysed, Nicola Susan Sconce was found to be nearly twice the legal

drink driving limit. Sconce (23), of The Old Stone House,

Mitton Road, was fined £100, with £40 costs, and disqualified from driving for 18 months. The court heard that she gave a reading of 67 against a legal limit of 35. Miss Wendy Shackleton (prosecuting)

said a patrolling police officer came across Sconce's Seat car, which had crashed into a lamp post in Mitton Road, about 12-20

Hi-tec Audrey hopes to go surfing the net from her home in Sabden

HI-TEC Audrey Barrett has made it her mission to get global "web-watchers" surfing into Sabden. The former teacher, of

ACCRINGTON Market Hall and the market clock, first set in 1871

Pendleside Close, is aiming to let everyone in the world see the delights of Sabden for themselves by creating the village's very own web

site. "I am hoping it's going to

involve the whole village whereby they supply me with photographs and any historical, geographical, commercial and education al information about Sab

den. " she said. Mrs Barrett has taken her idea to Sab den’s Millen

nium Committee. The self-taught web-site

designer admits she is "technology-minded" and

has owned a personal com puter for around four years. Now Mrs Barrett hopes

Camera club views its way through prints

MEMBERS of Ribblesdale Camera Club viewed the Inter-Club Photographic Alliance’s Home and Trade

Processed Colour Print Folio a t their recent meeting. A lot of high-quality round in which it was elimi-

pr ints arrived in no less than five folio boxes. No taped commentary was provided, but the work was enjoyed, especially as Rib blesdale made good show ing in both classes, gaining around fifth place out of over 20 clubs. John West and Derek Williams were particularly successful, being awarded a full 10 marks for excellent entries, and certificates of merit. The same Lancashire

grouping of clubs held itsannual slide knockout competition where 15 clubs from Chorley to Todmor- den and Ribblesdale to Bury competed. Each club submitted 11 slides with no more than three from each worker. Each slide was awarded a mark for the

nated. The most successful entries from Ribblesdale, which survived until the fourth round, were: "Lytham Mill by Moon light," by Frank Barnes and "QJ hauled freight on the Jingpeng Pass," by Ken Geddes. At this stage only the top slides were left in the competition and Rib blesdale achieved a cred itable fifth place when the marks were calculated. Next week will be the

judging of the annual com petition. New members are

always welcome and com petition nights are a good chance to see the best efforts of the club members. More information is

available by ringing 01200 423474.

Sporting chance for cash A SPORTING chance for Lottery funding is to be given to

Ribble Valley sports clubs. To explain the new sports Lottery structure and in par

ticular its small grants programme, which makes project awards of up to £5,000, a team from the North West Sports Council will be in the borough on March 24th. Anyone associated with a local club or team, who would

like to attend, should telephone Mr Chris Hughes, Leisure and Tourism Manager for Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil, on 01200 452479 to reserve their place.

Chess club lolds second

division place CLITHEROE Chess Club A team main tained its second-place position in the second division of the North East Lancashire League with a 3-2 win

over Rawtentall C. The first game to finish

was on board three, when Ray Sutcliffe made a seri ous error and quickly lost his queen, following which he resigned. The match was levelled

on board four by Brendan Brown who had a similarly comprehensive victory. On board two, Eric Mansfield was unable to make any progress against his oppo nent and, after swopping several pieces, the game was agreed drawn. Another draw occurred

on board five, when Stephen Robinson was also unable to make progress against his opponent. On the top board, John Smith for Clitheroe was building up an extremely powerful position so th a t i t was inevitable tha t his oppo nent would be forced to

resign. The next match for

Decision on village

voiced their concerns over the proposed housing, claiming it would result in a loss of parking space for res idents and tha t dwellings for the elderly should be built elsewhere. Several new

objections have been received in recent weeks, concerning a loss of privacy and s ta tin g th a t care should be taken when deciding which materials to

use. A new hall is being pro

posed nearby, with money from the Millennium Com mission and community funds, and Chipping Parish Council wants planning permission for the old site to be put to a marketable use. Chairman of the commit

tee, Coun. Frank Dyson (Clitheroe), said he was pleased at how all the par ties concerned with the issue had worked well together.
