Thornton C leveleys .....................................................••••■'* C L ITH E RO E ’S fine run of form came to an abrupt end at Littlemoor as Thornton Cleveleys came, saw and conquered to return home with the two league
points on offer. Despite a near monopoly of both possession and territorial . .. . ,
advantage, the locals were unable to convert pressure into points. Wave after wave of attacks crashed against the sold rock-like defence of the visiting team. For once the forwards, led by the gallant Roger Holmes,
met their match in the Thornton pack. Since the turn of the year, the Clitheroe pack have dominated their opponents m all
aspects of play and, in the process, they have laid the founda tions for victory after victory. Unfortunately that was not the
case on this occasion. With the forwards cancelling each other out, it was left to
the hacks to make the necessary breaks. F\y-ha\t Decian O’Duffy did this on more than one occasion, only for the sup
port to be lacking. Winger Andrew Moorby was unlucky to be ankle-tapped , , , , . ,
on one of the few occasions he rounded his man. Scrum-half Malcolm Heanan and O’Duffy shared the

points with a penalty apiece. Thornton claimed the only try on a rare excurison into the Clitheroe half and completed the soring with three long-range penalties. Weekend Team: Clitheroe (tomorrow, meet 1-30 p.m.)

Skipton LMS .......... 1 Clitheroe United . . 3 D E S P I T E g o i n g behind to an early goal, United recovered to win
well. The locals were slow to
get going, and Skipton punished a defensive mis take to take the lead. This woke Clitheroe up
and they began to get their passing game going. Midway through the
half Parkinson lashed in the equaliser. This relaxed United,
and LMS went into the break lucky to be level. Clitheroe came out hy
ing on all cylinders. Several chances were
squandered in the first 20 minutes, before the ever- aware R i le y put the locals ahead. He caught the keeper
o f f the line with a 25- yard volley into the top right-hand corner. There was a scare for
1 on the New Course. But Paul Dwyer and Grant Hamerton
(Manchester) lost 3 and 2 against A. Boat man (Royal WorJington) and C. Manson (Sunningdale) on Old Course.
United when Hodgkin- son gave away a penalty, but the kick was placed wide. Towards the end, man-
