I BUDDING Richard Bransons were given a flying start when the Ordnance Survey's hot air balloon landed in

Dunsop Bridge during a school mission. The grounds at Thorneyholme RC Primary School, sit uated in the UK's "centre-of-the kingdom" village, proved

the perfect launch pad for the flying lesson. The balloon, in the shape of a giant flying map, dropped

in on the school to celebrate the release of the latest edi tion of Ordnance Survey's 1:50,000 scale Landranger map

of the area.Supported by an interactive school pack, pupils were able to enjoy a presentation by the pilot and crew on the history, science and practice of flight, followed by a practi

cal demonstration. The balloon, which is on a nationwide tour of schools,

looks like a huge folded Ordnance Survey Landranger map, complete with hand-painted sections of a real map. Pupils were asked to identify Ordnance Survey symbols,

blown up to more than 20 feet tall, on the airborne map.(160399/24/9)

Dwelling must be bungalow

I PLANS to build a detached dwelling in Langho have been given the go-ahead - as long as the property is a bungalow. The site, on land adja

cent to 192 Whalley Road, is set in an area of open countryside, where housing development is usually restricted. But, in this case, planning officers feel the house would fill in an open space in an otherwise built- up frontage. A report to the Ribble

Valley Borough Council's Planning and Development Committee meeting stated: "As most of the houses along this street are bunga lows, including the property at 192 Whalley Road, it would be appropriate to condition any forthcoming consent to a single-storey dwelling." Members of the commit

Mr Pollard (66), a retired :

Dr William Lawler told ah inquest that the perfora tion, which had ultimately led to Mr Pollard's death, was one of the most com mon complications arising out of radiation treatment'. "There has to be enough

views. The final decision, which will be made by the coun ty council, will be taken in the light of the number and quality of responses received. It is important any argu ments for and against have substance." Echoing his sentiments, borough engineering manager

Mr Graham Jagger commented: "In devising this scheme, we are responding to public pressure. Neither the borough nor county councils have any desire to see it implemented

unless it is the choice of the residents. "Home permit parking is not an attempt by either of us

to make money, but to resolve a problem. Clitheroe has some of the cheapest parking in the North-West. Daily long-stay parking on town centre car parks works out at less than 50p per week, cheaper than a cup of coffee. "If people would bear this in mind, perhaps we would not have this on-going row."
