Big plans for hospital will benefit area

PATIENTS from the Ribhle Valley will benefit considerably from the £60m. hospital single site development in Blackburn.

Work based on the pre-

sent Queen's Park Hospi tal should be complete in about five years and will put all services for Black burn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley on one site. At present the various facilities are split, caus ing extra work for staff and delay for patients. The scheme will add

193 new beds to 50 of those already in use at Queens Park, which will be re-furbished. There will be an accident and emer gency department staffed and equipped for 70,000 patients a year, children's unit, six operating the atres for in-patients and four for out-patients, intensive care and high dependency units, and a doctor's surgery for cases not needing the hospital. The scheme is marked as

Aim is to make Clitheroe attractiye

spectacle for Christmas festivities Hopes hish for an end to the liRjhts funding saga

A UNITED front of Clitheroe councillors, Cham ber of Trade members and citizens is making positive moves to put an end to the town's on-going Christmas

lights funding saga. At a meeting of the Clitheroe

Town Council's Consultative Committee, several proposals were put forward to boost the Christmas lights fund in order to make Clitheroe more of an attractive spectacle for Christ

mas shoppers and tourists.

These included: 9 Expanding the existing Christ

mas lights committee ® Putting together a coherent

plan to develop the lights as an attraction over the next few years O Submitting a tri-partate pro

posal to Ribble Valley Borough Council, including funding for lights in Longridge and Whalley, to bring about a degree of funding

parity. 9 Looking into new sources of

income including sponsorship and a

public appeal to "buy a bulb." 9 Conducting a survey to estab

lish exactly what local people want for the future of the lights and what they would be prepared to pay

towards costs. At the meeting, attended by over

30 people, Clitheroe Town Mayor Coun. Alan Tearing pointed out that, while 31 local firms con tributed £775 to last year's fund, donations were down £400 on the

previous years. The total expenditure on the

lights was £2,877.30, which after

contributions from the town coun cil and chamber of trade, still left a

deficit of £392.97. I t was this situation that the

Christmas Lights Committee was determined to avoid again. I t was decided that the newly-

expanded committee should con vene on July 21st to discuss putting the proposals into practice. There was also some discussion

about the future of Clitheroe win dow boxes and it was felt alterna tive funding sources needed to be explored in this area as well.

a priority one by the Gov ernment and will provide millions of pounds in work for local people and local suppliers. But everything will be done, says the Gov ernment, under specially monitored and very demanding "value for money" criteria. The chairman of the

Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Care NHS Trust, Mr Ian Wool- ley, says that the area will have some of the best facili ties in the country to deliv er a modern and high quali

ty service. But the trust is mindful

of the increasing demands on its services and the need to keep up standards with in the present set-up. Chief Executive Mr John Thomas has pledged that all concerned will continue to ensure that any neces sary money continues to be spent on Blackburn Royal Infirmary. He sees the new scheme as a very exciting opportunity to modernise the NHS locally and is looking forward to meeting the challenges it offers. The patients' watchdog,

Exciting TV chance for area’s youth

I A GO-AHEAD London TV production company is on the hunt for 16-year olds to appear in an exciting new youth programme. The capital-based Pacific

company want talented young stars to appear on a programme it is making for Sky One about what life is like for teenagers. The pro gramme makers would like to hear from extroverted youngsters who think they would shine in front of the cameras as they are tracked by the programme through out the summer months. The would-be stars could be involved in a wide range of interests, jobs or perhaps, just going somewhere inter esting on holdiay, but, say the makers, they need to get in touch with them fast, due to looming deadlines. The first port of call tor any interested youngster is

Circular walk for town’s ramblers

TWENTY walkers took part in Clitheroe Ramblers' Tuesday walk last week. They began near Gisburn County Primary School

and mainly followed the cir cular route, which is described in the small leaflet produced by Lan cashire Countryside Ser vices and available from the tourist office in Clitheroe. It was a fine sunny day

and the walkers crossed beautiful green fields to Rimington Bridge and the

village itself. The group then turned

north to Great Dudland and crossed the A59 and the railway before descending through Steep Wood to the banks of the River Ribble. The route back to Gisburn followed the Ribble Way.

February 11th. Already £4,000 has been raised by various events, but more cash is needed. Because the trip will be physically demanding, par ticipants are being remind ed that concentration on training and the improve ment of a variety of skills will be needed next term.
