TH E memory of James Braid contin

ues to be perpetuated at

Clitheroe GoU Club. In the early part of the

20th century James Braid, along with Harry Vardon and John Taylor, did as much as anyone else to pop ularise golf in Britain. They were known as "The Great Triumvirate". Braid won the Open five

times and was runner-up on three occasions, and later in life he was much sought after as a course designer. In 1926 Braid created

new tees and greens at Carnoustie, where the 128th Open Championship starts today, and also played a part in the development of the Clitheroe course. Hence the James Braid

Open Singles, a long-stand ing annual tournament which attracted 181 com petitors to the Whalley Road club on Saturday. Wilpshire's Ian Perkins

had the kind of round Braid himself would have been proud of as, in scorch ing and on a day when the course standard scratch was 72, he left the others vying for the Southworth Trophy - the prize on offer in the gross category - trailing in

his wake. Perkins returned a scintil

lating, four-under-par 67 to

win by no fewer than six shots from Ralph Postleth-

waite of the host club. Paul Marlow (Clitheroe),

Mark Ashworth (Great Harwood) and Denis Greenup (Clitheroe) all handed in 75 and won the other gross prizes. Clitheroe members

___ is expected to line up against his old team on Saturday as Stockport bring a strong side to Shawbridge for a show

piece friendly. The 6ft 5ins giant, who

left Clitheroe in a club record £35,000 deal for Crystal Palace three years ago, has been the subject of intense speculation linking him with Leeds over the

summer. But for the time being at

least, he remains a Hatter, and he is expected to be given a chance to impress new County boss Andy Kil-

ner. The former Claret took

over from Gary Megson late last month, and a source close to the club said: "I would expect Carlo to play. "Anyway, Kilner needs to

have a look at his whole squad, who haven't had a chance to impress him yet. "Kilner will look to impose his style of play on

the team. "The game is being regarded as something of a behind-closed-doors fixture in Stockport so as not to expose his new ideas. "So I would expect the main body of the first team

to be present." That could mean an

behind France at strokeplay, England entered the match- play element and defeated Spain and Holland 4-3 before succumbing to the host nation 4.5-2.5 in the final on Saturday. Kim partnered Fiona Brown

thought we could have returned home as champions, but after the strokeplay rounds it was obvious France were going to be tough oppo

made her debut in the Euro pean Championships in Fin land in 1997, when England finished seventh. Kim heads to Scotland

next week to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the two-day Vagliano Tro phy match against Europe at North Berwick GO. Europe won the Yagliano
