Ribblesdale Cricket League resulted in a land slide victory for Read over Clitheroe at Chatburn

Road. A u s tra lian a ll- rounder

Peter Sleep shone with both bat and ball as Read raced to an impressive nine wicket vic tory with seven overs to spare. Clitheroe elected to b a t

a f te r winning the toss and opened w ith professional Stephen Benjamin and Mark

Bolton. They h a rd ly made an

aggressive stroke in the first 15 overs, a t which stage Bolton was caught by Chris Bennett oft Sleep for 18. Neil Bolton and Benjamin

took the score on to 92 before Bolton was bowled by Sleep

for 16. Benjamin, having posted

match in the Jennings

his half-century, swung a t new bowler Warren Eastham ■ and was caught a t deep point by Graham Bardsley for 58 with the score on 96. Eastham struck again in

his n ext over by bowling Burns for two, and a t 98-4 after 32 overs Clitheroe need ed to establish themselves. Stephen Bishop and Coul

ter took s teps in the rig h t direction and added 39 before double disaster struck. Sleep bowled Coulter for

20, had Musson s tumped next ball but was denied the hat-trick by Gaskell. Bishop (37 not out) and

Gaskell (14) were unbeaten ^ Clitheroe closed on 171-6 in the allotted 45 overs. Read began th e i r reply

cautiously with L ittle and O'Connor watchful of every

ball. However, in the sixth over

O’Connor pulled a hamstring taking a quick quick single

and had to retire hurt having contributed 10 runs to the

total. Enter Sleep to give an exhi

b i tio n of b a t t in g which b ro u g h t for th admiratio n from the home supporters. Sleep and Little took^the

score past three figures and reached 110 when Little was caught by Coulter of Ker

shaw for 51. Sleep was joined by rela

tive newcomer Eastham and with Sleep playing shots s tra ig h t from the coaching manual and Eastham hitting the ball extremely hard it was only a matter of time before th e runs were knocked off and Read clinched victory at

173-1. Sleep, who completed his

fifty off 65 balls, was 69 not out and Eastham carried his

bat for 30. Five points enabled Road

to remain in th e champi onship race.

The result was a blow to

Clitheroe, though, who may now have lost too many games to make up the leeway. RS

Na-waz in rans as Wanderers -win

ib b l e sd a l e wanderers got back to winning ways on Satur day with a comprehensive eight- wicket win over Edenfield at Gin-

croft Lane. The home side won the toss and elect

ed to bat on a good-looking pitch. Andrew Ainsworth made an early breakthrough, removing Smithson's off

stump with the score on 19. Kershaw and Taylor then took the

score to 48 before the former had to

retire on seven. Wright made a quick 13 before being

well-taken a t slip by professional Shahid

Nawaz off Da'vid Howard. Edenfield professional Paul Ridgeway

soon followed, again well c aught by Nawaz off stand- in skipper Graham

Monk. Ribblosdale were now on top, and

iiubuaic

once T ay lo r was ru n o u t , wickets began to fall and the innings eventual ly ended with the score a t 143 in the

43rd over. Monk finished with creditable figures

of 3-45 off 21 overs, with Howard also taking three wickets, and Barry Spencer and Ainsworth one apiece. Wanderers' reply started disastrously

when Richard Palmer was bowled off the th ird delivery of th e innings by

Ridgeway. But Howard and Nawaz took the

attack to the bowlers and were within one run of victory when Howard was

run out for 53. Nawaz took his seasonal tally to 838

Whalley close in on derby rivals ----- -- • 'I

HALLEY moved to within three points of derby rivals Clitheroe -

whom they face this week end - with a run-rate win over Blackburn Northern

on Saturday. Ma rk F a llo n 's side

knocked off the reduced tar get after holding the s trag glers to 132-5 in 45 overs at Pleckgate. Four overs were lost in

reply, and with one wicket left in the tent, Dave O’Neill and Simon Gorton kept their heads to s te er th e S ta tio n

Readers home. Northern took first knock,

and although they lost both openers Walton and Watson without scoring - Jason Smith and O'Neill taking the wickets, professional Mark Lomas and

Weaver frustrated the locals. They rebuilt the innings in

a century s tand before the former East Lancashire man was stumped by David West- wood off Gorton for 28. Weaver lost Bromley for

five, professional Graham Knowles taking the wicket, before he was bowled by the ex-Haslingden batsman for 75. Gillibrand (11 not out) and

Gambles ( th re e n ot out) managed to take the score to

132-5 at the close. In reply, Whalley lost their

skipper cheaply (two), caught behind - one of Bromley's five

victims. But seven of the remaining

batsmen all made crucial con tr ibutions - with the other three all out for ducks. David Pearson (22) and

Knowles (14) both fell to Weaver, as did Daryl Red

-

head (14). Lee Kearsley failed to

make an impression on the board, but there were further useful knocks from Paul Macintosh (14) and Jason

Smith (18). David Redhead and West-

wood both failed to score, but O'Neill (18 not out) and Gor ton (17 not out) took the score , to 129-9 to secure the win. NORTHERN

LITHEROE seconds emerged vic torious in the big Ribble Valley derby against Read on Saturday.

Read batted first and posted a challenging

score of 182-8 with D. Thistlethwaite con tributing 54 to the total. In reply Clitheroe cantered to victory with

Belvedere, however, rocked the Ribble Valley

outfit and it was only some brave batting from the last pairing which saw Salesbury home. John Kearsley (86) and Nick Keighley (52)

were the main reasons why Whalley seconds claimed an eight wicket victory over Black

burn Northern. Blackburn’s 179-4 was easily passed as

Whalley k ept up the pressure on leaders Barnoldswick.

length of time. His half-century enabled Ribblcsdale to i ,
