Vital help group celebrates one year of caring

THE highly-valued Home-Start Ribble Valley scheme is almost one-year-old. The much-needed ""

home visiting pro gramme supports young families through difficult periods. A spokesman said:

"During this time, 16 vol unteers have completed the 10-week preparation course, which then enables them to be carefully matched with a family which they visit on a weekly basis. "The families may be iso

lated, inexperienced or may have several under-fives, twins, triplets or children with special needs. All of our volunteers are parents and are. therefore, aware of the many demands placed on parents of very young children. "Home-Start believes

that help, given at a time when a young family may be under stress for a variety of reasons, can prevent fam ily crisis and breakdown. The volunteers provide breathing space for parents and the work is complemen tary to that of professional workers involved with the families."

The organisation is due

to hold its first annual meeting on May 25th at the borough council's mayor's parlour between noon and 2 p.m. At the AGM, nomina

tions will be accepted for the positions of chairman, vice-chairman and treasur er, as well as general mem bership of the committee. The spokesman added:

"If anyone would like to become part of the scheme, please get in touch with the organiser beforehand, or come along on the day. "The AGM will give peo

ple a chance to meet the organisers and the commit tee members, and to find out more information about this excellent, much-needed

service." Maxine Nightingale, the

North West regional con sultant, will be speaking at the meeting and light refreshments will be provid

ed. Further details may be

obtained from Sylvia Wyatt on 01200 442102.

drove the short distance home from the pub a fte r his wife com plained of feeling

unwell. The journey of less

than a mile proved cost ly for Moores, who was breathalysed by police outside his home. Moores (34), of Painter

Wood, Billington, pleaded guilty at Blackburn Magis trates' Court to driving with excess alcohol, and was fined £400 with £40 costs and disqualified from dri ving for one year. He gave a reading of 57 against the

legal limit of 35. Mrs Wendy Shackleton

(prosecuting) said police had followed Moores from the Whalley Arms car park and had noticed he was not wearing a seat belt. Mr Nick Turner (defend

and

ing) said Moores' business would be dramatically affected by the inevitable disqualification. Ho said Moores had been to the pub for a meal with his wife. Normally, they would have left the car and walked the three-quarters-of-a-mile

homo. "His wife offered to drive

home, but Mr Moores did not want her to because she was unwell and he volun teered to drive himself," said Mr Turner.

Curtain up on comedy next week

A LOCAL amateur dra matic group is venturing into the world of comedy next week. St Mary's and Friends, in

Sabden, will be taking to the stage with their first- ever comedy, "Goodnight Mrs Puffin", by Arthur Lovegrove. In the past the group has

specialised in musicals, but members are confident that this first comedy will prove great entertainment. Produced by Ethel Tay

lor, it will be presented next Thursday, Friday and Sat urday, May 20th to 22nd, in St Nicholas's Hall, Sabden, at 7-30 p.m. It tells the story of a fam

ily planning a wedding, but when the mysterious Mrs Puffin arrives on the scene who knows if the ceremony will go ahead and, if so, who will marry whom. Tickets are £3 and you

can pay on the night or buy in advance from Dee Bot toms, on 773984, or Betty Clarkson, on 772762.

Rovers on ball

for local pupils THE plight of Blackburn Rovers has been of special con cern to everyone at Pondlo Coun ty Primary School, Clitheroe. Despite the pressures facing it,

the club sent two of its young stars to the school to fulfill a promise made in less stressful

times. They wore not able to attend

the spring fair at the school, but took part in a soccer coaching

session instead. Michael Bingham (seen on our

picture in goal) and Leo Hardy passed on a lot of tqis. Daniel Anderson and Joe Golden are on the line, and on the right with Leo Hardy are (from the left) Luke Driver, Joshua Black, James Blackburn and Lesley Wilson. "We wore very grateful to

Rovers for thinking about us despite the club's own problems," said a school spokesman. (290499/9/8)

DIAMOND anniversary celebrations brought past and present members of Gisburn Young Farmers'

Club together. The generation gap, and

distance, were forgotten as the party at the Rolls- Royce Welfare Centre, Barnoldswick, got into full swing. Guests from throughout the country enjoyed the dinner, followed by dancing to Carlisle's

Hunter Band. A potted history of the

club was given by Mr Win- skill Coates, a former club leader and long-serving sec retary to the advisory com mittee. In recognition of his long service, the club presi dent for the past 29 years, Mr George Bargh, was pre sented with a pen by last year's chairman. Miss Ali son Bargh, a namesake, but no relation. Our picture shows organ

isers and club officials. Among the organisers wore Mr and Mrs W. Graveston, Mr and Mrs W. Coates, Mr Robert Bargh, Mr John Bancroft, Mr G. Bargh and Mrs Barbara Downing. (020599/10/16)

Naturalists enjoy a walk to Israel Farm

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Naturalists enjoyed a walk from Eldroth up to Israel Farm. Here the 35 participants enjoyed excellent views of Inglebor- ough, Pen-y-ghent and the limestone

scars above Clapham. Twenty-four flowers were noted, and

member's had chance to look inside the tiny church- cum-school at Eldi'oth, which is extremely well cared for.

Kevin shows it’s never too old to learn - by being nominated for top national award

A S A B D E N man who has proved that you are never too old to learn has been nominat ed for a national award. Mr Kevin Barrington (59), of

Homeacre Avenue, is one of seven nominees tp receive an award from Accrington and Rossendale College on Tuesday. The presen tation has been organised as part of the local celebrations of national Adult Learners' Week, for which Mr Barrington had to fulfil stringent selection criteria. His academic achievements

include a BTEC National Diploma in Design, A-level Graphic Design

and a GCSE in Design Photogra phy, as well as two modules of a City and Guilds in Photography. Mr Barrington was nominated

for a Certificate of Achievement by tutor Mr Alan Crabtree, and he admits that, at the beginning, the thought of studying with younger students was daunting. He said: "I

' overcame this by just being myself and letting things take their natur al course." The courses, he said, had helped him increase awareness of

arts and computers. Nominating Mr Barrington, Mr

Crabtree said he had improved on and developed a whole range of art and craft skills and had "confront ed and overcome a computer blind

spot". He said: "Working with younger students has added much to the classroom dynamics, and his wealth of life experiences has given group activities a wider dimension. Mr Barrington has contributed to a number of community projects." The Open College and Work

Experience group at Whalley Adult Centre is also to receive an award, as part of Adult Learners' Week. Members include adults who are considering entering the teaching profession and have had to over come many difficulties in returning

to learning. The group has undertaken work

experience placements in local pri mary and secondary schools and

has been nominated for its collec tive enthusiastic contribution when accepting new challenges. All members of the group intend

to carry on with their education, with some planning to go directly to university in September, while others will embark on post-gradu ate teaching certificates. In a joint statement, they say:

"In all cases, returning to learning has meant that we can plan for a future career in addition to manag ing our families. Our outlook has been broadened by the stimulus of adult education and we feel equipped to meet new challenges."
