RESUSCITATING membership was the aim of an open day organised by the Clitheroe division of the St John Ambulance

Brigade. To breathe life into the

branch by recruiting new trainees, its current tally of 15 adult officers opened the doors of its headquarters in King Lane to demonstrate first aid techniques and air the charity's video, which was shown on a special large-screen TV, loaned by Uugdale's, of Chatburn Road. A cake stall and raffle

were also arranged, raising £48.67 for division funds. With new Tuesday evening training sessions for

A coffee evening will bo held at Tee- wood Farm, Fell Road, Waddington, on Wednesday, July 28th, and the annual show will bo on Saturday, August 28th.

adults, cadets (11 to 16-. year-olds) and badgers (six to 10-year-olds) planned for the coming months, anyone interested in becoming a brigade member should telephone Supt Phyllis Cooke on 01282 779740. The division attends var

ious events in and around Clitheroe to provide first aid cover and has even sent its volunteers for duty at Blackburn Rovers home matches. Our photo shows a shirt

sleeved Mrs Cooke with, from the left. Miss Barbara Peel, former division Supt Edna Hothersall and Mrs Marilyn Townson, with three youngsters deter mined not to be dummies when it comes to knowing how to save lives. (090599/19/13)

Heifers sell readily at the mart

FRIDAY'S second beef suckler sale at Clitheroe Auction Mart saw a very good entry of Belgian Blue calves. The highlight of the day was an entry of heifers with calves at foot from Bernard Ogden, which sold readily to sev eral buyers and ranged from £600 to £1,050 per family. There was a pleasing trade for

some beef bulling heifers, with the stronger sorts at £300, while a

number of Belgian Blue saw a fly ing trade lo end around the £445

mark. A good entry of around 220 is

promised for tomorrow. The trade for some of the large

numbers of ewes and lambs for ward was a bit disappointing . Mule hoggs started well at £38, but later went cheap. Prices reflected the fact that cast burned ewes are not the most valuable commodity. There was an increased num

ber of cattle at Monday’s weekly sale, with Continental bulls hit ting three figures and better cat tle finding improved demand. The first of the grass cattle are start ing to appear on the market now. Bulls: premium made to l l lp

(average 108.75p), prime to 105p (102.71p), commercial to 90p (84.29). Steers: prime to 98p (90.34p),

commercial to 85p (82p). Heifers; premium to l l l p (110.5p), prime to 108p (105p),

commercial 95p (83p.) There was much better trade in

new season lambs, prime hoggs and cast sheep, with some vendors on their first "draw" going away very pleased. Hoggs saw a good number for the time of year, with the better end selling well - ewes were a mixed trade. New seasaon lambs: light to

88.71p (78.77p), standard to 148.Glp (132.92p), medium 139p (130.38P). Prime hoggs: light to 88.71p

(78.77p), standard to 85.29p (63.10p), heavy to 80.43p

(77.07P). Cast ewes to £31 per head

(£16.50). The usual numbers of calves

wore forward, with IB ones at £42, and a Friesian bull calf fit for rearing making £62. Not many beef type calves, with a heifer at £46.

after pleading guilty to using threatening behav iour. The court heard th a t
