Wanderers hold their nerve R

IBBLESDALE Wanderers held their nerve to win a thrilling Ramsbottom Cup tie with Bax-

__ _/enden in the last over. The weather meant the game went into a second day on

,

Sunday, and the spectators were engrossed to the end. Wanderers won the toss and chose to bat with profes

sional Shahid Nawaz again in sparkling form, plundering 91 off 95 balls.

He and Richard Palmer shared 45 when Palmer went m r-

the 15th over for 11, caught off James Capstick. Martin Briggs, beginning to find his form of te t season,

1 joined the pro in a stand of 83 as Nawaz punished any- 1 thing loose, smashing three sixes and 13 fours before being

caught off opposing number Davies.

Three balls later Ainsworth went for six, and in the next Peter Usher joined forces over David Overy and Graham Monk bagged a duck.

Braithwaite. With two overs to go, and

Baxenden requiring 11 to win, Braithwaite bowled the over of his life, conced ing just one run and taking two wickets to level the wickets-taken tally. Ainsworth then faced the

pressure of the final over. Three runs were scored

back in it. However, the youngster

kept Baxenden out, as they finished on 192-9. Ribblesdale's never-say-

die attitude prevailed and they

now face

Oswaldtwistle Immanuel, conquerors of Clitheroe, in the quarter-finals.

Clitheroe hit for six in cup

IG -H IT T IN G former Clitheroe FC centre back

____ Russ Whalley helped dump Clitheroe CC out of the Ramsbot

tom Cup at the weekend. The Oswaldtwistle Immanuel profes

sional, formerly with Lancashire League Rishton, led his side to a nine-wicket vic

tory with a fine 80 as this first round tie went into a second day due to the weather. Phil Bishop won the toss for the

locals, and chose to bat at New Lane. Andy Burns and professional Stephen

Benjamin got off to a steady start, sharing 27 in the first 14 overs before Whalley took a catch off Woods to send back Bums on 12. Mark Bolton joined the pro, and they continued to add runs at a similar rate before the former was caught behind oft Whalley for 15 at 55 in the 26th over. Benjamin and Neil Bolton put on

Bolton (21) followed in similar cir cumstances at 88.

Mick Dewhurst and Stephen Coulter smashed 27 in six overs, but the latter

fell to Hornsby for 10. Dewhurst (22) gave the same bowler

a return catch at 122, and only a run was added before M. Coulter (0) also fell

to Hornsby first ball. But skipper Bishop and Bibby hit

some valuable runs as they moved past

150, but the captain was bowled by Hornsby after 19 in as many balls. Bibby (11) and Neil Winckley (5) saw

out the overs to finish on 154-8. The score looked defendable, but

Immanuel made light work of it. Whalley and David Watson raced to

52 without loss in the first 10 overs, and had 94 on the board after 20 as they took the attack to Clitheroe. The pair had taken Oswaldtwistle to

the brink of victory at 130 when Whal ley fell to Dewhurst for 80 off 64 balls, which included seven fours and a whop

ping six sixes. Watson and Gerard Metcalf finished

the job with little trouble, with Watson

HATBURN suffered a disappoint ing weekend as both teams' batting collapsed chasing gettable totals in the

league. And on Sunday the first team were knocked

out of the Wynn Cup - but not after a valiant effort.

Church Institute out for 151, but were then skittled for 56.

On Saturday, the first team bowled Skipton ,

, . And the seconds could make only 77 alter r.

Bradley had made 122. Chatburn won the toss and put Skipton m

to bat on a wet wicket. Early wickets gave the locals hope, but

everything went wrong after that. Several dropped catches and bad fielding

saw Skipton take control and reach 151. Chatburn's batting was poor, with only Andy Booth coming away with any credit

with a knock of 15 not out. In the cup against Haworth, the locals won

the toss and chose to bat on a damp wicket. Chatburn batted well, with Howard Braith

waite (46), Ted Topham (47 not out) and Rod Booth (27) the pick as the side made 158-6. _ Richard Shovelton and Andy Booth bowled

well, and the fielding was fine, but being with out a fourth bowler cost the locals the upset

of the first round. Haworth won in 36 overs by three wckets.

On Saturday night the side had only eight

players, and needed three from the sccontls, and tho team did the club proud in tlie cir

cumstances. Again, tlie seconds flattered to deceive.

Captain Gary Clarkson won the toss and

put Bradley in on a drying wicket. Cliatburn's bowling and fielding was e.xcel-

lent and some superb catclies were taken as Bradley reached 122. Clarkson took a superb

6-27 off ills 16 overs. Tlio home side's total looked witliiii reach

on a small ground. But the batting fell apart, and only Andrew Lambert scored respectably
