$ S k ft#? SPEED MERCHANT: Mini stock-car driver Joseph Frankland *
FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Joseph Frank land is racing ahead in the world of Mini stock-car racing. Joseph, whose dad, Stephen,
owns Pilkington Bridge Car Sales, Altham, is stepping up from compet ing in club meetings to take part in the BRISCA national championship. This season, which starts next
month, he will compete against the country's top young stock-car drivers at meetings all over the country. Joseph, who started racing at the age of 11, has three cars, each set
up to be driven on different surfaces. All have been adapted to provide considerable safety features. He is sponsored by his father's company and Welcome Financial Services. Dad Stephen, himself a former

award from Welcome Finance for concluding the most finance deals of any dealership in East Lancashire during the past year.

its handling and ride. And if the tweaks help the latest Vectras
to handle as well as the new Astra, it should make it a far more desirable product. Substantial changes to the chassis and
suspension should result in sharper respons es, cleaner cornering and less cabin roll. And bigger wheels — standard tyre size increases from 14 inches to 15 inches - will improve
comfort levels. Vauxhall says the changes allow the car to
handle and steer better and to stop better, thanks to larger front disc brakes. Stopping distances have been cut by about five metres per car and drivers can expect pads to last up to 50 per cent longer. Lower running costs are achieved with all
models. A new 1.6 litre 16-valve entry level model is eight per cent more efficient - about three miles per gallon - and the latest
1.8 litre 16-valve ECPOTEC engine cuts consumption by around 11 per cent. The new models will be distinguished by bigger bumpers and door mirrors plus a new
chrome grille, Inside, the designers have taken a lighter
approach, with more colour choice, higher- quality trims and bigger storage areas. Rear
passengers get marginally more leg room through re-sculpted front seat backs and all models now get anti-lock brakes, Traffic-

noticeable noise and fuel consumption improvements over its rivals. Being only slightly larger than a medi
um-sized saloon, the HRV has ample room on country lanes and around town — yet commands the respect and offers the superior visibility more usually found with bigger vehicles such as the
Range Rover. Its IGOOcc engine is flexible and lively,
and the vehicle is as happy cruising in fifth gear as it is nipping the around country lanes in the lower ranges.

consumption is expected to be around 32 m.p.g.
Overtaking is no problem and fuel .
The HRV is very well equipped,
boasting an excellent stereo, electric windows and mirrors and ABS brakes. There are twin airbags, air condition
ing and power steering which, far from being a token contribution, allows the
driver to feel the road in a way more often found in cars from sporty manu
facturers. On the road, the HRV is very com . . TTT1Y r ♦ -
posed, with no undue body roll and a tau t chassis free of rattles which, when pushed to the limit, maintained a neu
tral balance. Despite the high ride, at no point does
the vehicle feel top heavy and the dri ver's ability to see over hedges and coun try walls allows better progress than in a car. Yet he - or she - should never feel they are attempting to manoeuvre West minster Abbey, as is so often the case with four -wheel drive vehicles. The HRV buyer will enjoy a highly-
equipped, very capable and pleasant vehicle, which is fun to drive and yet practical enough for any member of the
family to take the wheel. The HRV should prove ideal for peo ple who pursue outdoor interests or for
